System edited: I just picked up a pair of Entec SW5 subwoofers that need some repair, the surrounds are shot. I have not had time to check out what else might be needed. I've been using the Steelhead straight into my power amps for both LP and CD. Far superior to the CAT preamp on both. I'm trying to figure out how to add on the tuner and CDR and a run to the subwoofer crossover that is separate from that to the full range speakers.
My VPI JMW arm setup takes RCA cables. All my previous arms used DIN to RCA, so I have been using a regular Cardas Golden Ref IC instead of a true phono cable.
Inserting the Cardas phono cable in place of the IC+ has had positive effects, at least for the two hours I have had to listen. The cable obviously needs to break in, being a litte constricted in the sound envelope, but the bass definition improved, the tone on string instruments was more realistic (tho a little edgier).
The RCA to RCA makes using my cable enhancer easier, so I'm going to burn the new phono IC on it for awhile and listen again.
System edited: Manley Steelhead phono preamp is being added. I bought a dealer demo version 1.0 and Manley is updating it to version 1.5 before I even see it. I believe I get the 5 year warranty and I know I get the (now unavailable) gold faceplate. The unit serial number is 001, and is confirmed as the first production Steelhead. I asked Paul, a very knowledgeable and friendly guy at Manley, whether I needed anything special replaced/repaired/upgraded since this was the very first unit. As I am sure you have all experienced, a lot of companies' gear changes from unit one to unit ten, with little upgrades, parts replacements and so on made as the company got feedback and listened harder. Paul told me they made possibly a hundred Steelheads before they were satisfied and released the product. Mine is the first of the line, he said, but the only changes that are required are contained in the normal upgrade from 1.0 to 1.5. This upgrade adds a line-in for one non-vinyl source (CD, tuner, karaoke mike?) and lets a vinyl oriented guy use the Steelhead directly into the power amp. I've read various reports; in some it worked great and others reports unacceptable losses in dynamics. I'm hoping for the best. The jump from ver. 1.5 to 2.0 adds extra RFI protection, makes the line-in standard, and has five buttons, adding back a function I didn't care about (and thus can't remember right now). Has anyone had experience using the Steelhead with a low output MC into any amp similar to the CAT JL-2 into speakers with a 92db sensitivity?
I am in process of buying a used Manley Steelhead, version 1. I will have it modded to add the line output. I want to see if I can use it straight into the power amp. Has anyone had any experience doing this?
Rhyno: Chang Lightspeed is okay for front end components, but not power amps. Mine is older and I'm interested in upgrading to newer models. Your silver circle review was quite interesting. Thanks. Steve
no idea how competent the chang lightspeed is, but i received great improvements by putting a silver circle transformer in front of my line level gear.
see the review i posted, and contact silver circle about a demo. might be worth your while. was for me.
System edited: Should I upgrade some accessories - a newer, bigger power conditioner, an Arcici (or other) rack, Valhalla (or other) IC for phono, whatever - or get a new component? If component, I am thinking new phono preamp, linestage, or subwoofers. Open to suggestions and advice.
to Pubul57: Sorry about the confusion. If I remember correctly, I had committed to purchase of the JL-2 in payments and finally received it (after having a custom wood shipping box built)in September. I think. Anyway,I never expect to buy another amp. Absolute magic. And huge. If you'e thinking of getting one, the dimensions are a bit misleading as to actual placement space, because the ICs and speaker cables connect to the sides of the amp. Depending on the stiffness of your cables, you can need another 3+ inches on each side for clearance. I wasn't able to hide it from my wife inside WCD cabinet as I did my previous amps (monos), especially when I put it on a Sound Anchor amp stand. Am now working on getting right power cord for it.
In another posting on 9.21.03 you indicate that you just recevied the CAT JL-2 "last week". Was the system above on your "wish list" as of 5.03? A bit confusing.
There have been VAC PA 160 monoblocks for sale here on Agon. I had a pair and they were fantastic. Sold them to put in a HT. If I ever went back to tubes these amps would be it. Also the service from the boys at VAC is second to none. I stopped in unannounced when they were in NC and was treated to a tour and a listen to there inhouse system. Upgrades available and their tubes were also fantastic for replacement. I even had my CAT retubed. Great performance for the $.
