Description

Hi, I don't know if I should be listing my system here or in the opinions please section. But that section seems to be more high end and I'm very budget oriented. I would like some opinions of what to do next.

Here's my current setup:

I have digital audio (mostly high bitrate mp3s, but moving into lossless audio) stream to my airport express. Then by optical to a PS Audio DLiii. Then interconnects to an Arcam A18 integrated amp, and then out to my Tannoy dual concentric monitors.

The Tannoy dual concentric design is fantastic for vocals. I got the Arcam because it matched well with the speakers. And I really like the recent addition of the PS Audio DA converter. But I did try earlier a Music Hall DAC which gave the speakers much better bass than the PS Audio seems to have. Though the PS Audio has better instrument separation and detail.

So the question is, where do I go from here? I would like to get more bass and range. I know the speakers are capable of it after hearing the Music Hall. But I don't want to give up the PS Audio quality and step down to the cheaper DAC. Opinions?

Great system! Compact and focused in prupose; very nice. I don't think you'll need to step down to another DAC, the PSA unit is a solid choice. I think you would be best served by acquiring some hi-resolution audio to more accurately assess the weak areas of your system. I have been working with streaming hi-resolution audio for some time and have found that even 320kb/s MP3s will sound thin and mechanical, especially lacking in tuneful bass as the wavelengths greatly increase, thus you notice the missing musical information even more below, say, 50Hz. The Arcam is a great little integrated, and the Tannoys seem to have some positive reviews. They are 6db down at 39Hz, so if it's bass you really want, you may be forced to move to a larger floor-standing speaker, or add a subwoofer to the mix. Good luck!
