Description

I think the focus, so far, is going heavy on source and weak on everything else. The RP56, DAC1, 9911U and the various tape decks are or were top-drawer source items in their own way. Foremost on my mind is replacing the RP56 (and possibly the DAC1) with perhaps a Denon 3910 that would give me a few extra formats (DVD-A, SACD) to play with and undoubtedly is a better DVD player than the RP56. I use a Sennheiser HD650 headphone so replacing the DAC1 also would mean finding a decent headphone amp... probably a Ray Samuels SR71. What I do not know is how the 3910's analog stage would compare to, say, the Benchmark DAC1.

I'm definitely weak on the receiver and speakers. My hesitation on upgrading is the lack of cost constraints in this area as one pursues the "best." For VCRs and tape decks, it's relatively easy to point to certain models in years past and say, "viola... the best." I can look at the Dragon or CR-7A and feel that way... and neither of these are $10k items. With processors and speakers, however, it's a completely different ballgame, and "how much is enough?" is a tough question to ask.

Finances unlimited (but keeping it reasonable) I'd probably look at a Meridian G68 with a set of DSP5000s all around, but even there I'm reluctant to make that kind of investment on the eve of the HD-DVD/Blu-Ray/HDMI era.

I probably will hold off on receiver + speakers until the end of this year to see how HDMI switching developers in the AV receiver marketplace.

    • Benchmark DAC1
Fast, precise, and without any frill. My headphone "rig" for Sennheiser HD650s.
    • Panasonic RP56
One of the original Panasonic DVD players with Faroudja DCDi on-board. Works great but built like a tin can.
    • Nakamichi DR-1
The first Nakamichi deck I owned. The sound is to die for. It is scratched up, but works very well. DR1 was one of the last great Nak decks, and also has playback azi adj.
    • Sony WM-D6C
The portable Sony Walkman for high-quality listening. I found this NIB for $100. Wow!
    • Nakamichi Dragon cass
Mint condition, NAAC for auto azimuth adjustment of the playback head. Feels a little cheap for the price. Contender for
    • Nakamichi CR-7A
Mint condition minus a couple of buttons, manual playback azimuth adjustment and unreal recording capabilities. Feels more
    • Philips DCC-900
Ah, the DCC-900, an excellent looking and sounding DCC player. I only have two pre-recorded tapes, plus a handful of blanks. What do I do with this?
    • Acoustic Research Master Series
Been using these for various audio and video applications. Very pleased with the quality for the price.
    • JVC HRS-9911U VCR
The current king of the hill of SVHS VCRs when it comes to potential output image quality. TBC, digital image enhancement and solid s-video output. Build quality of a tin can.
    • Hsu Research Ventriloquist VT-12
These are simply amazing 6.0 speakers for the money. Simply amazing.
    • Hsu Research VTF-2
A great complement to the VT-12 ventriloquist surround system.
    • Onkyo TX-SR601B
I got this open-box for $300 about one and a half years ago. It's served its purposes well, although it looks like a bit of a vanilla piece amongst this newer, fancy hardware.
    • Sony TC-KA3ES
This is, I think, the top Sony ES cassette deck ever sold on the U.S. market. Purhased at the beginning of my tape hobby. Excellent build quality and very precise, stable sound.
