Description

This is the system that I am going to assemble instead of the old minicomponent system which is finally dead. It will be located in the 12x15.5 feet carpeted room, with two French doors that are constantly open, an entrance and a window. Ceiling is 8 feet. The distance between speakers and the sofa where I will be listening is 8.5 feet. A small glass coffee table is between the sofa and speakers. The speakers themselves will be approx. 5.5 feet apart and 0.5 feet from the wall.

Of all the components, only the source (Pioneer) and Atacama Nexus stands are in place. The Classe CAP80 amplifier was bought here on Audiogon and should be in place soon. The system will be expanded later by addition of a tape deck, a turntable and possible a tuner. I listen mostly "smooth jazz", guitar music, some old disco and rock, and occasionally classics. No heavy metal, hip-hop etc.

Question-do I need a dedicated rack for the system components and some sort of power conditioner?

Components Toggle details

    • Mitsubishi LT-30
One of the best vintage mid-fi linear trackers. Fixed, restored, but always the last in the line for tweaking.
    • Benz Micro MC Gold
Low output moving coil cartridge. I like how it sounds but not as much as that of Dyna Karat 17D2 MKII. However, Benz will stay in the system for now.
    • Cambridge Audio Azur 640C Version 2
This initially good-sounded CDP responded so well to simple modifications (upgrade of stock electrolytes to Nichicon and two out of six stock opamps to LM 4562) that I dropped the idea to replace it. Just some more tweaking is needed!
    • Nakamichi Dragon cass
Capacitors upgraded then serviced by a pro. Sound GREAT!!!
    • Nakamichi CA-7a
Interesting piece of equipment. Great soundstage and incredible instrument separation but requires proper handling and attention. I almost sold mine since it sounded bad until I realized that bias voltages were out of specs AND that one SHOULD NOT use silver interconnectors. Keeper for now even before tweaking.
    • Luxman R-117
Top of the line Luxman receiver. Sounded great even before tweakings/upgrades. Now used as power amp.
    • Nakamichi TA-4A
Top of the line tuner amplifier. Heavily modded. Spent two years in my system as a main amp; replaced with the Nak CA-7A pre plus Luxman R-117 as power amp.
    • Vandersteen 2CE Signature
    Best speakers I've ever had.
    • Atlas Equator
Choose these because they are WhatHiFi 2007 product of the year. Will stay with the system during next upgrade.
    • Zebra Cables Biwire
Choose these because of the price and because VAndersteen strongly recommends biwiring. Like them.
    • Lowan Matrix II
Great modular rack with spikes. Just need to get another module!

System dramatically changes since the first incarnation. Only Atlas interconnectors stay the same.

System edited: The amplifier has been changed: it's Classe CAP 80 now, bought here on Audiogon. Expecting it soon.
