Description

This system serves as a 2 channel system in our spare bedroom (used as a den). The room's dimensions are (15 X 10 X 8.5) ... a decent enough room size that 2 channel HT works out well.  Why Six Degrees of $1600?  As it worked out, each component in this system cost about $1600 each.

How does your new Yamaha BD player compare to your older Pioneer? And have you tried playing cds on it? I've been curious if the new bluray players, like your Yamaha, are good for cd playback, especially compared to your Apollo cdp. Thank you.

I have been re-watching "Kung Fu" (the classic early-1970s show with David Carridine) after having recently acquired them on DVD . . . one of my favorites.

The episode I saw last night was based around a character that owed somebody a cat -- evidently they were very rare and desirable as pets in the American West in the 1870s . . . one line was "a good cat like that can fetch fifty, maybe a hundred dollars!". What's that in today's money?

Not that I could ever put a price on the twelve years I've spent with Warren, or even his step-sisters Ellie and Miss Kitty (we have a Brady-Bunch household with our cats . . . Warren however keeps the girls far away from the living room). But it does seem that the companionship of a cat has historically either been highly treasured (worshiped by the Egyptians) or feared (i.e. the Witches' Familiar) . . . not a whole lot of in-between.

Rich,

Great story about Archie Le Chat.

Red and Blue cat are named by my son and his girlfriend who rescued them from a shelter. Red team leader and Blue Team leader popped into their youthful minds due to a video game they were involved with.

When John went off to Tech for college Patti and I inherited the two pussy cats. Not what I planned but I love them all the same. Red is Tabby with reddish orange coat and Blue is more dark brown and black. Blue is a Manx, sturdy as a bulldog with a broad stance and not afraid of anything.

One member of my audio group brought his Chocolate Lab to an audio meeting and Blue charged the glass separating them as to say "get out of here dog, before I get you." He's much too small to take on a Lab but his heart and soul are the size of a lion.

In spite of that, late at night when everyone else is sound asleep, Blue creeps quietly onto the covers of the bed until his face is almost touching mine, his purring wakes me up but not my wife. Blue is not content until I tell him he's welcome to lay beside us and he cuddles until dawn.

Kitty cats are funny, odd and very different than dogs. I love all animals, and my son has had dozens. With that being said, these two may be the best cats I've ever had.

Oh my, the problem with not updating pictures. Archie Le Chat passed away last August after 17 years on God's good earth. Of all the cats that I have shared my house with, Archie was one of the sweetest and was quite the character. I was always adding names to his title and at the end, he went by ... Archie Boo Boo Meow Meow Pussycat known as le Chat at the Ronin Museum (where I signed his name and drew a picture of him in the guest directory). Archie took ill during the last 3 years of his life . I did the best I could to keep my best friend happy and comfortable and it was worth the all McIntosh system that I never got to purchase.

So, Ruby (the 15 year old) and Buster (the 2 year old) now rule the roost. Ruby notices when the sound goes off and it is time to change the CD. Buster, whose pictures appear in my other 2 systems, could care less. No one is quite the Dylan fan that Archie was.

Kirk ... Warren is adorable. I love the beard. I am fascinated by the project that you worked on. My dad owned a TV repair shop for more than 50 years. We are just starting to break up the business. There's a lot of junk, but there is also a lot of audio history there, as well.

Albert ... any chance that Blue is a Russian Blue?

Best regards,

Rich

Our cats, Blue and Red approve of Archie Le Chat

Enjoyed reading about your simple, concise systems - and especially the pictures of Archie and Buster. Nice!

Ray:

Thanks for the kind words. That picture was snapped in 2004 by my niece at her grammar school graduation. Her mom had passed away a year earlier and as you can imagine, it was a bittersweet kind of day.

Little did I know that just about a year later, I would need six additional spine surgeries to repair my spine. At one point, I was actually clinically deceased, so you can imagine what my smile looks like these days.

Best regards, Rich

Rarl, you look awful happy for a fellow who just had surgery,,,,just happy to get home to your tunes!LOL

Your final system looks very pleasing. Is there anyway to take the speakers out of the bookshelves and put them in front of the bookshelves. If they could be stand mounted the soundstage would be so good that it would really impress you for dvd's, not to mention music.

I have always had a 2 channel music/HT in a small room (12'x13') and have never missed the other 3 speakers. Maybe a sub would help, but I wouldn't want a cheap one and give up musicality so I never went for it.

How do you like the Luna? I used to have a Jolida tubed integrated. The soundstage was awesome, but it just wasn't refined enough for music to my ears. It was great on movies, but you would be sweating by the end of the movie because of its heat output in a small room.

My current set up is a Audio Refinement Pre5, Pass Aleph 30 amp (30w/30w), Cary 308 cdp, cheap Panasonic s47 dvd, and homemade speakers. I just sold my AE DJH tube preamp for the solid state Audio Refinement pre. I missed the big soundstage but love the remote and detail.

I'm now thinking of selling my Cary cdp and getting a good DVD like your Sony. How is it on music? That is important to me.

System edited: Very few components remain in this system, since I first posted the system in September 2003. I have paired the Prima Luna Prologue Two with the Omega Super 3 loudspeakers. The Omegas are a single driver, high efficiency speaker system designed for use with tube amplifiers. The sound is spectacular ... very engaging, pleasing, and nuanced.

The Omegas, when compared to the AR 302's, do not go nearly as low in the bass department, but the sound is still so good that the bass is not missed. The Omegas are placed on their sides, with the drivers on the outside and the bass ports on the inside. Schematically, it looks like [ O ... o] [o ... O ].

A SONY DVD player/recorder has replaced my 5 year old SONY DVD player. The new SONY provides a noticeable improvement in video playback quality.

System edited: I just upgraded my main system to be a mostly Musical Fidelity system (A300cr power amp; CD PRE 24 preamp/cd player). Accordingly, the SONY SCD C555 ES sacd/cd player has been moved to my 2 channel HT system. The synergy that I found with the NAD/Music Hall combination has been maintained with the NAD/SONY combination. Good move so far.

System edited: Replaced cd players. The Pioneer PD-65 requires servicing and so the Music Hall MMF CD-25, which was being used in my bedroom system, has been swapped in. Talk about the importance of system matching ... the Music Hall and the NAD 320BEE absolutely sing together. The Music Hall has found a new home.
