Description

The room which is in the lower level of a bi-level was totally gutted. There was no flexibility in the rooms layout as the rest of the lower level was already finished, so we worked with the L shaped configuration. Rather than constructing a "true theater style" room, we decided to plan it so that it was somewhat of a multi purpose room that was still conducive for entertaining small groups. In doing so we used the smaller section of the "L" for a sitting area with an LCD TV, and a walk up bar that also houses the A/V gear. The 3 sided gas fireplace breaks it up, adds some warmth, yet leaves you with an open feeling. (Don't blame me for the choice of the movie posters...my wife played a hand in that!) After installing chase tubes for all of the audio/video wiring, the build up began. The interior and exterior walls as well as the ceiling are insulated and then covered with double drywall (with the exception of the ceiling in the main area of the theater that has a recessed black suspended ceiling). The lighting is all remote controlled Lutron Spacer Systems broken up into 5 zones with 5 programable "themes". The audio/video equipment is built into the recessed bar area and is also accessible from the rear (in an adjacent room). The projector, a Benq PE8700 mounted on a Chief ceiling mount, projects onto a 92 inch Da-Lite Perm Wall High Contrast Cinema Vision screen. The DVD source is a Bravo 2 DVD player connected via a DVI cable. Of course the theater is also equipped with HD Satellite. I am just itching to get either a BluRay or HD DVD player...but I will wait to see who wins the war. It is all tied in with a Universal Remote MX-850. Other misc equipment includes a Harmon Kardon T-60 turntable with a Benz Micro Gold cartridge. For a small room, we are pleased with the results...even the wife likes it!

Components Toggle details

    • Vandersteen 3a Sig
We designed our theater in a relatively small space, with no choice on the layout. BUT I refused to go to in wall/ceiling speakers!
    • Vandersteen VCC 5 Signature
VCC 5 is on a custom Sound Anchor stand made for my Bryston 9B SST.
    • Vandersteen VSM-1
Richard suggested just going with the "non Signature" versions.
    • Vandersteen V2W
This may soon find a new spot in the theater, to be replaced with another 2WQ.
    • Bryston SP-2
This is a very, very nice unit with trememdous flexibility.
    • Bryston 9B-SST
Although the processor is 7.1 capable the room dimensions only allow for a 5.1 system.
    • Music Hall CD-25 with Level 1 + mods
Very, very nice sound for the money.
    • Vandersteen 2WQ
I may add a second 2WQ and relocate the V2W.
    • Benq PE 8700
The HD2 DLP projector is ceiling mounted on a Chief mount.
    • Bryston BP-1.5
Had to have this unit as opposed to anyother brand...well...it matches the SP 2 and the 9B SST!

Love your setup.
I am planning on upgrading my 2ce Sig's to 3a's, like yours. 2 2wq's, vcc5 and vsm-1. Why did he suggest non-sig's? Would you do the Bryston again? I have nad and Rotel. Looking for final answer on what to drive the front speckers.

Thanks for the comps. Good taste in your equipment! I have another 2wQ on order right now. I am anxious to try them in stereo. Do you have any pics of your room? I have thought about using room treatment, but I am not sure that my "better half" would appreciate it. I dont know how it would fit into the decor.

Very nice theater. I also have the Vandy 3A, VCC 5, VSM. I have a Revel B15a sub but am looking at some pt of getting a 2WQ (or 2) to supplement the 3A's. I also use Bryston (SP 1.7, 9ST) electronics and have a front projector (NEC HT1000). One of the biggest improvements I have made is with room treatment. I highly recommend Real Traps. So far I have only treated the first reflection pt on the sidewalls and the front corners of the room. A big improvement in detail and imaging.

Thanks. Funny thing is that I have had Vandys for years (model 2s back then) and I really liked them. You are right that they aren't much to look at though. I am very pleased with the way things turned out. I am going to try the second 2WQ, but I will have to see what I will do with the V2W. Thanks again for the compliments!

I've always been interested in trying the 3a Sigs with dual subs, but I was never fond of their appearance... however, you've done a very nice job of integrating them to make the room look nice and neat. Very well done... I'd be proud to have your set-up!
