Description

Built "Great Room" as part of new home a few years ago, very large room (8500 cubic feet +). Hiding equipment in entertainment center increased WAF to 100%. When we first moved in many components were 25 to 30 years old (Technics SP-10, Beveridge Model 3) - Thresholds still that vintage. System has been evolving more in the last few years than in quite some time. Have a pair of VTL tube amps to play with next. HT System in same space posted separately.

    • Magnepan MG-20.1
Full Range Planar w/ Ribbon Tweeter
Black w/ Custom Natural Cherry Finish
    • VTL MB-450
Powerful Tube Monoblock Amps (~500 Watt into the Maggie's 4 ohm load). Very nice match with the 20.1's, good bass, nice depth, smooth mids and highs, and as much power as I've needed.
    • Thorens TD-295 MK IV
Basic Turntable w/ TP42 Tonearm and Auto Shut-off
    Mohogony Finish
    • Grado Labs Reference Sonata
Moving Iron High Output Phono Cartridge
    • SignalCable Ultra Speaker Cable
    Bi-Wire configuration, spades @ amp, BFA Banana's @ speaker
    • SignalCable Magic Power Cord
    5' 15A 10AWG for Power Amps
    • Emotiva XMC-1
Surround Sound Processor that doubles in my system for a two channel preamp. It's fully balanced L/R channels drive the VTL MB-450 mono blocks and the Magnepan 20.1's. It's Reference Mode is a very clean straight path, but it also has a Direct Mode that allows me to add the SVS subs.

System edited: Switched to the VTL MB-450's over a year ago, good match for this speaker. Mostly listened to ultralinear so far and think the extra power is the ticket, but will have to spend some time in triode mode to see how it sounds. I can also now add the Nola subs from the HT system to the 2-channel side when wanted.
