Yes, mercury is still used in fillings. However the liquid metal is not allowed to
be exposed to the open air. Once it is mixed with the silver alloy it is safe.
I will say that I believe in the next few years the amalgam fillings will be
eliminated. We already have to have all scrap alloy to be collected and properly
disposed. I am not saying having that tonearm is going to do you great harm,
but the facts are you are breathing in mercury . Mercury in any quantity is not good for you. Elam , I am not trying to give you a bad time but I stand by advise
....loose the arm

Dear Drjoe thanks for the info and the concern.
I've had this arm/cartridge combo for almost 20yrs. as well as several friends, without any problems. I would think that if you're in a small enclosed area without any venilation your point would be definitely a real concern but in a well venilated room with high ceilings...
Also, don't they still use mercury for fillings? If so, wouldn't that be more of a problem to your point?

Thanks,
Elam

Dear Eee3, your system sounds real good. My only comment is your tonearm.
I used to own one myself. Great idea using the mercury pools to eliminate
wires at the pivot. However you should know that Mercury has a low vapor
pressure at room temperature. What this means is that the mercury slowly
evaporates and you are breathing in mercury metal that is absorped through
the lungs. As I am a dentist, mercury spills in our office is very serious.
In essence you are living with a mercury spill. Just a thought. ...I got rid of my
arm.
Sincerely Joe
