Description

Hmmm... Right now just wanted to get basics up. Pictures coming in a bit. Achilles heal: need to get the good cables in and perhaps new speakers, those SMGa are awesome for the money (especially $200 used) but don't stand up with the rest of system. Debating between 1.6 and the smaller Magnepan (11) as that would fit in room better in terms of aesthetics.

Components Toggle details

    • Musical Fidelity A5
Musical Fidelity A5 CD Player with output tubes and much upsampling.
    • Adcom GCD-700
My first good CD player and I keep it as it complements the A5 in that it is a 5-disc changer.
    • Supratek Chardonnay
One of the best pre-amps at any cost? Could be... For tubes current using all NOS Mullard GZ34, Sylvania 6S97 and RCA 5881s.
    • Pass Labs Aleph 5
A true classic with few peers...
    • Magnepan 3.6
    Woo hoo!
    • Hsu Research VTF-3 HO Subwoofer w/Turbo
Has to be heard to be believed.
    • Panasonic TH-42PHD9UK
42" 1080i Plasma. In 2005 - 2007 if you do the research, these and Pioneers (for much more $) are the ones to get...
    • DVDO Edge
Once you get used to this, you can't live without it! Video processing for those who aren't familiar with it, it does the up-rezzing of standard TV, and deals better with HiDef than normal processing as well, sits between video sources and your TV.
    • Beresford TC-7520
An awesome DAC that competes easily at 4X - 8X the price.
    • Sony BDP-S350
Very inexpensive blu-ray player. Also plays BR-music to my DAC.
    • Yamaha KX-930
While this deck is from probably 1988 it actually sounds really really surprisingly good if I record something on high quality tape from CD and play it back...
    • Kimber Hero
XLR between Amp and Pre-Amp, RCA between CD and Pre-Amp and between DAC and Pre. The best inexpensive dependable cable I know of. If you like crazy cables, get this one first for a 6 months and then compare improvements to this - provides very reliable solid baseline.
    • Kimber Kable Monocle XL
Great mid-level Kimber Kable (can we really call this mid-level?)
    • Monster Cable HTS3500
Decent Power Conditioner from a long time ago.
    • Salamander Various Archetype
Small maze of archetype 5.0 and 3.0 stands.

Woo hoo! Just ordered Magnepan 3.6s. Very excited. That also means I'll be putting up pics after they come in. Why do so many people get black Magnepans? I'm getting the white ones, and for now just have the Oak coming, but plan to do custom woodwork to upgrade the wood. My place is very lightly colored. Also, the white doesn't look as large and my living room isn't quite large enough for the 3.6s, so that helps a bit.

I listened to at least 15 top speakers in the 2k to 5k range over the last 4 months and the 3.6s blew them away as far as my criteria went. Was going to get 1.6s as mentioned above, but when I compared them to 3.6s - people in general don't talk about how different they are. The 3.6s are something special... An amazing speaker! Not at all "1.6 but bigger". Something quite different. It (obviously) adds the ribbon, and I also only just now appreciate that the 20.1 is also not a "3.6 but bigger" as it uses push-pull versus single ended. Each of these speakers are all very very unique in their own right!

Thanks! I've been looking around for a while now and am settling on 1.6qr. I've tried a bunch of other speakers and they just don't do it for me in same price range. I think at 3.5 - 4k you can start to do what the 1.6s do at just under 2k. I started another thread on it - called something like 'anything better than Mangepan 1.6s?'. I listened to a bunch of speakers they recommended, and think the 1.6s for now should be best bang for the buck. I'm really looking forward to it as the SMGs just delaminated so I'm completely out of the water right now!! I was very very tempted by some used VonSchwerkits, but even used they are 4k. Oh - and apparently there is something of an upgrade path with the 1.6s with various mods, although they are all hotly debated. I think I'm going to pull the trigger any day here, so reply to the other thread if you have any solid alternatives to 1.6 at 3k or lower! The best non-planar's I've heard in that price range so far are some Dali's - imaging was crazy sharp, very fun. I was also extremely tempted by Innersound Isis Mk IIIs (3k on sale), but when I listen I often have several friends over and we all cluster on one couch, some sitting in front of it some on it, and the sweet spot for these are super super tiny, so wouldn't sound the same for all those people. The 1.6s sound pretty darn good for at least 5 feet wide or so. So the small sweet spot part turned me off a bit from those.

Hey Lightminer, nice system. I just wanted to mention that as a long time Maggie SMG and 1.6qr owner I can tell you that your components are still going to have much potential that will not be revealed by even 1.6's. As musically enjoyable as 1.6's are, they are still far from the last word in many aspects of music reproduction. If size limitations are a factor, don't be afraid to look at dynamic speakers when you upgrade, there are any number you can buy used for the price of Maggie 1.6's that will be good alternatives.
