Description

This is a rather simple, but high quality digital only system. I am fortunate to have a dedicated room. It has been analyzed with a RTA and the remaining bass modes addressed with the Rives PARC which is highly effective.

Pls tell me about the dCS Puccini...

Lenny, it's been a couple of months since I've been over to listen to your wonderful system!  I'm currently adding more room treatments and the improvement is startling!  We have to get together soon!

Thanks John. The amps in the picture are .....'s. Mine are at Ayre in process. Even with the hours on these, they are still subtly changing, for the better.

lenny_zwik

Hi Lenny congrats on the new amps !

System edited: Uploaded new pictures to reflect the addition of the dCS U Clock and the update of my MX-Rs to MX-R Twenty version.

Thank you for the compliments. All the cabling is balanced Cardas Golden Ref., except the speaker cables of course and the coax between the Puccini and U-clock. Power is all Shunyata, Anaconda variants with a Hydra 2 to the power amps and a Hydra 6 to the front end. The run to the power amps is 6M, much longer than I currently need, but that was what I needed from the installation in my previous house/room. Because the amps sit between the speakers, those cables are only 3M.

lenny_zwik

Hi, the system looks wonderful. I have my electronics and sources setup off to the side wall with the speakers on the front wall similar to you and thus have to use 15ft speaker cables. How long are your speaker cables, and what are you using?

foster_9

I have had some experience comparing my media server to CD playback. Each were run through the dCS front end. Although I couldn't discern much of a difference, it did allow me to get rid of all 300 CDs.

Hi all, I missed quite the conversation over the weekend. Thanks for the kind words, John. I've been a firm believer for a long time that until you get the room right, you're not deriving full value from your investment.

I've not made the direct comparison between music server and shiny media spinning, but I've heard many times, albeit anecdotally, that the spinning disk does sound better.

lenny_zwik

Revelation. Thanks Jfrech.

thesaint519

Hi all i m saying is try a good spinner one day soon ...yes the puccini upsmples redbook and digital inputs to dsd...

The room, as i found out, is vital...i might take a good room over better eectronics/speakers...its that big of a deal...

jfrech

Hi Jfrech,

Thanks for the update. I run an all digital system via a
media server, so I don't need a spinner. Does the Puccini
player also upsample to DSD? Talk to me about room
treatment. How much of a difference did it make for you?

thesaint519

Hi I owned a Delius using a Esoteric DV 50s as a transport. I hate to say this...but the Puccini was far superior on redbook...and SACD that much more. Then I added the U Clock..and agree 100% with Lenny's assessment. I've since moved on to a Scarlatti Transport/DAC/Clock...

I still think the best digital is via a spinning disc.

Lenny's system is pretty amazing. I've heard it...he really was the one that drive me to treat my room...

jfrech

Hi Lenny_zwik,

Thanks for the update. I currently run dCS Delius & Purcell as my front end. Any experience with them? I'd love to get a comparison between the two or even between the DeBussy and my front end.

Ah, yes I'm derelict. So here goes:

1. The sound as a whole is more organic. By that I mean that the individual instrumental images seem more integrated.
2. There is a greater sense of flow, pace and rhythm to the music.
3. The soundstage seems to extend both wider and deeper with those instrumental images being an integrated component and not just points of sound in space.

All in all a very worthwhile investment, especially at the $3500 pre-owned price.

Lenny_zwik,

Can't wait to read that Puccini U-Clock update.

I added a Puccini U-clock a few months back. I'll post updated pictures when I have time.

Hi Jason, Yes I do, they're the 20" super traps. I also have a stack of 16" on top of the 20" in the bay behind the listening chair. They solved 95% of my problems, but still left me with a couple of modes (31 and 62 Hz) that I couldn't get rid of without using the PARC.

Hi Steve :-) See you on the 18th!

lenny_zwik

Hi Lenny, do you have 20 inch ASC tube trap stacked in the corners behind your Wilson speakers. I am very impressed with the ASC Tube traps and use the 16 inch stacked versions at Parmenter Sound.

jasonparmenter

Hi Lenny,

First, I apologize for jumping in so late on this thread. Steve with the Summits in Round Rock here, for reference (aka - scotch and listening parties). Very nice looking system you have. I'm have similar room mode challenges and as I recently added 2 subs, while the extra low end impact is great, the 30Hz room mode peak is not better (maybe worse). I'm also thinking about a PEQ and since the Rives seems to be the only analog high quality unit, it's likely on my short list. I'd love to hear your setup sometime and check out the PEQ on/off to assess the impact. Happy Listening!

I thought this system looked familiar! Hi Lenny! Guys, I've been aspiring for the last couple of years to get the quality of sound that Lenny's system produces. An absolutely great system!

@Baxman: sorry for the late reply. Yes, I use Shunyata Anaconda CX or VX as required along with a Hydra 2 for the Ayres and a Hydra 6 for the front end.

@Thesaint: congratulations!! I'm sure they'll only get better as time goes on.

lenny_zwik

My Lamm M1.2s came in today. WOW!!

thesaint519

Do you use any after market power cords?
