Description

I've kept the pix here SMALL, to save download time - larger pix are on my website. ...Ok, well, it changes... things go in, things go out as I design and test them. The amp is stable, the Silver Lightning Interconnects are stable, as is the passive silver "preamp" as well as the DAC. The DAC is due for a new design to come in soon, obviously past due for a 24/96 unit. I've got a range of speakers to use, including some direct radiator three ways, horns of various sizes and shapes as well as the ubiquitous Acoustat panels on a space frame (shown in the system picture). Let's not forget the Quadripole subs, recently upgraded with some new wiz bang high power, high Xmax drivers... wocka, wocka!!

ok, this, I just added...

there's an analog front end that you can not see in the picture, but it should be on the white topped table to the right of the leftmost turntable, which has a Koetsu Black in it, btw. The phono pre is what I call the "FUN-O" since it is pure fun to listen to. It's a unique combo of the FET/417a front end, and split RIAA EQ that just kicks it and is so nice to listen to.

The passive "preamp" is the green thing on the rack, with the two largish knobs. It's got a large silver contact wiping switch as a stepped attenuator (discrete "L") and another one for input switching, all silver wiring.

There are a pair of my SE Mosfet amps sitting around too...

they're 35 watts of sound and about 100+ watts of heat. They do have solid state filaments, btw. :- )

The Flame Linear 400 amp has been replaced with a modified Crown Macro-Tech (look ma, no fan!) for the subs...

My stratos tweeter and mid cabinets are against the rear wall, right of the rack...

The ESLs are pushed out more than usual, since I had just routed out the hole for the new drivers in the cabinet that is second from the right, so I had slid the speakers over to make it easy to get the cabinet free and not have to take the whole thing down...

Red Strat to the left...

Genuine GE line voltage meter on the floor in front of the rack...

Not visible on the shelf behing the right ESL is a large collection of big bottles, including a WE 1kw tube that is like a 3-1000 and a TL1000 (don't drop that!).

The silly JVC Super-A reciever is the tuner.

The DAT machine is not in this picture.

The white thing below the BEAR Labs bear sign is my custom DAC...

Speakers usually sit on top of the Quadripole Subs which works out great for most of them...

The room is 14' x 30' - yes it is not optimal, but it beats one that is too short and not big enough. I've had 3 musicians and a drummer in there without moving any of the speakers or other gear... not too bad. Hey, if I play live music, I dump the instruments into a mixer, pan 'em and play through the system... keeps things controlled, clear, clean and nice. :- )

Listening position works out to be usually about 15 ft back from the speakers...

Oh, I took down the ceiling treatments a few years ago because of a smoke debacle in the building, and have not put them back up... where the heck are those volunteers when you need them? ; - )

Is that enough?

    • Bear Labs Symphony No. 1 Amplifier
A serious amplifier: about 4kVA of power supply xfmrs, with only 500,000 ufd of filter caps on the rails of two channels of DC coupled (no servos) Mosfet power at 180 watts into 8 ohms...
    • BEAR Labs Silver Lightning
What else would I use? :- ) You can bring yours around and we can see what we see... Or better still you can get some from me and you can see what you see... : -)
    • BEAR Labs Quadripole
Serious subs... few subs move air like these do. If you play Mickey Hart's Dafos and you are NOT pinned to your chair, and the room does not shake, and people who were not expecting it do not get a worried look on their faces, you don't have subs like these. They are also reasonably room independent... there are some curves on my website if you are curious...
    • A Bunch of 'em TUbE aMpS Acro, Altec, BEAR, Dyna, etc...
Got some Altec 1570Bs - big power and great for ESLs with only a few mods - they run in AB2. Have two pair of Acro ULIIs under resotoration for too long... and a single Acro 120. Have a McIntosh 50-W2 on the bench for testing (beautiful two chassis amp). And a Dyna ST-70 which is scheduled for a nifty mod board... these are just he ones that I still own - fyi, that's like my 12th or 13th Dyna... I expect to build up some other DHT triode stuff for my own use and as part of my continuing *horn* project. Yes those horns can sound spectacular if done right...

I left a bunch of stuff out... wasn't sure how this thing was going to look or work... maybe I'll go back and add it in now... geez.
