I like dark sounding speakers, because I listen at high volume and it doesn't hurt my ears, and give me a listening fatigue on a prolonged listening session.
I love the Tannoy 15 inch coaxial speakers but can't swing them at the moment. Jbl 4411 sounds pretty good to me, but I would welcome comments on improving them, and my system as a whole.
I tend to like also the British gears. Harbeth and BBC monitor speakers sound good to my ears.
Don't get me wrong - I am pretty happy with my system, and enjoying it quite a bit, but just wondering where my weak link is, so I can improve it.
For the amount of money invested in it, it sounds pretty good to me.
What do you guys think?
Did I do ok, or should I address some part of the system?
Good news! Glad to be of some help. Now...onwards. In terms of further isolation (it does NOT always work)...you have to experiment. You have 3 basic options:
1. Nearly free...some people 'float' their stuff on top of 4 tennis or racket balls...to isolate a bit from vibration coming up from the shelf
2. Moderate cost...various Herbies feet, sorbethane cones, etc.
You can also purchase 3"-4" thick high quality plywood shelves...anchor them securely. Cinderblock maybe with blu-tack is really cheap and very solid. There are custom high end guys who use 3"-4" thick high quality birch ply so you are in good hands using this stuff.
3. More cost...the sky is the limit. HRS, Stillpoints, Artesania...read the reviews...all are excellent. and there are others.
Tennis balls & really thick high quality ply may help get you started...but be careful!!! you dont want your equipment rolling off and breaking!!!
If you have further questions...let me know. Look forward to your results. Again, it does not always work but generally should help.
Then we can discuss cables if you wish. Good luck and have fun.
Just curious more than anything else. I would have guessed possibly cables as a first port of call for upgrades. But since you ask, put a weight of some kind on top of your dvd player, ideally over the area which covers the transport (assuming slider drawer).
If you have access to cups/cones, just curious if you hear a difference...not necessarily always going to be an improvement. but if you start to hear improvement by trying to isolate your player from vibration, that may be a hint to push you to try preamp as well.
Again, would still guess cables but depends on budget as with all things.
let us know what happens if you try to 'damp' the dvd player a bit.
hmmm...refinement. That is a tough one because it comes from lots of places. In my own experience, the hunt for purity of tone, grainless presentation comes from eradicating grain and noise from every place conceivable. 'Stereotypically' it starts with the source and runs all the way through cables, power, isolation, etc.
I would 'guessed' you might find greater purity/less grain/more refinement thru changes elsewhere in your system before you went to change the speakers.
Have you experimented with isolation on your transport, cables, anything? just curious before i start suggesting a bunch of stuff you've already done.
Those 4411's sound fantastic, but are very different from the L100's Not a single component is shared between the models. Only similar in appearance, aside from the dome tweeter.
