Description

This is my little "retro", mid-fi forray into aural heaven...I'm not sure where this is going to lead...

I have recently started to get back into this "scene" after a LONG absence. So much great equipment, so little time (or money, for that matter!).

I really wasn't sure where to re-enter this world, so I went back to where I left it. I found the NAD equipment (a well-know name from my past) on eBay and snapped it up. The Angstrom speakers are left-overs from university days, but they still sound good (especially with the signalcable speaker cables).

Any thoughts from the experts out there?

Thanks for the info, Timo...

I have pretty much been on "audio hiatus" since my last post (june --- yipes!).

i actually don't find any harshness with the kimber...but that could be due to the fact that my gear is in a room with "cushy" furniture, wall-to-wall carpet and heavy drapes.

one day when i have an actual "listening room", i will investigate different cables.

cheers

System edited: I just bought a pair of Kimber 4PR speaker cables on ebay for $30 Canadian. The Signal Cables were good, but I found the highs rolled off a little too soon for my liking. The Kimbers sound significantly brighter, but not harsh. I'm definitely pleased with this change. What next...?

Thanks all for the advice/encouragement. I have quite a collection of LPs (lovingly stored, of course), but my old turntable (technics SLB-20 w/audio technica cartridge) has been misbehaving since about 1992. I just sort of put it out to pasture and havn't really thought about a replacement since then.

Any suggestions, given my current "line-up"?

Regarding my ebay experiences: so far, so good. I have made a purchase from a guy who clearly loves music and audio and seemed genuinely sad to see his component go. I have also made a purchase from another guy who basically operates an on-line store for vintage electronics (not just audio) which was less personal, but still very professional. My most recent purchase was from a woman who seemed enthusiastic at first, but a bit lackadaisical once the auction closed. Oh well... generally, I only look to buy from people who love music and have cared for their equipment like a loving parent (you know the type!). Any time I see an auction that has that flavour of "I had this thing in my basement...don't know anything about it", I don't even bother to investigate further.

I am looking forward to my first audiogon purchase, as I suspect everyone here is the music-loving, my-equipment-is-my-baby type (like me).

Thanks again for the encouragement.
