Description

Recently changed the MF A300 for the A5. More drive with the bigger output of the A5. Also have just added the Wadia 170i and Audio Note DAC to the combination and enjoy the flexibility of the iPod interface.

A move of house has changed the sound somewhat, with hard floors and highly reflective surfaces, so may look at damping the room in the future.

System is used for music, tv, movies rather than dedicated audio. I have a couple of other small systems I use for my "get away from it all" music listening (see bedroom systm photo). If synergy is what it's all about, then I'm very pleased with my current set up. The MF front end and amplification blend nicely with the Mordaunt-Short speakers (review posted a few weeks ago).

There is upgrade potential for the future but I'm happy for the moment and just enjoying the music.

As a fellow Morduant Short Performa 6 owner I can truly appreciate how good your system is and how under appreciated these speakers are in the United States. The Performa 6's wipe the floor with many well known audio sacred cows that cost much more and I have heard many of them so I can speak from experience.

Thanks for the tip, Nrostov. I've a 10th anniversary coming up and enough time to give some strong hints! Whats the capacity of the Itouch?

Hey Hens,

If you have some extra cash try the Itouch. The solid state drive produces no mechanical noise unlike the iPod classic further improving the sound. Plus all the other features on it are pretty damn cool.

Hi Linnie01 - see my review of the Wadia dock here on Audiogon. In short, it is well worth it in my system. With the inclusion of the Monarchy de-jittering device, this ipod/Wadia combo is the match of my MF A5 CD player but with all the convenience I need.

How much of a difference does the Wadia make on the ipod? Is it worth it?

Thanks Timrhu, I really appreciate your kind words. Its been fun putting it together and having clean aestetics, whilst not as important as the sound, is still a major consideration in our household. Checked your system and love the simplicity of it as well. Would love to hear those Thiels in your setup.

The simple systems always catch my eye but yours is not only simple, it is gorgeous! A good source, integrated amp and speakers in a well thought out room are all it takes to get there. You have done it and done it in style.
And having the wife's approval is an added plus. Great job!

timrhu

Hens,

Thanks for the kind words but Mordaunt Short's are also about as transparent as it gets! Nice symmetry and the brushed steel on black look of your system is so cool!

Thanks Shadorne! The aesthetics are important to me and very important to my wife. I won't show her the pics of your system as I know she would immediately ask the question why we don't also integrate our system into the room like yours! Looks awesome by the way - love the ATC speakers - closest midrange I've heard to the original Quad 57s but kills the Quads at the top and bottom!

Stunning - very aesthetic - well done!

System edited: New Musical Fidelity A5 amp replacing the MF A300. Added the Wadia 170i and Audio Note DAC to provide the iPod convenience in my main listening system. Sounds good and I plan to write a review of the Wadia/Audio Note combo in the near future.

Hi Oz,

The speakers are about 11 ft apart and 12 ft from the listening position. It was recommended that a listening angle of about 60 degrees from the listener to each speaker was ideal so a wide space between the speakers works well with them in the very large listening room (there is about 24 ft of open space (dining area) behind the listening position.

Those speakers look like they are in separate time zones....

Hens,

Your welcome.

Thanks for the kind words. I guess that you're referring to the system with the Zu Tones in my work office (Pathoslogical)? Yes, it sounds as good as it looks. I've had a couple of friends in there whom are local HiFi dealers and it is fun to see them shake their heads in disbelief. Despite the room being somewhat "live" with all the glass and what not, the carpet, furniture, and acoustic tiles go a long way towards taming this and balancing things out.

If you get a chance, check out my V3Ms in my home office(Second System Sanctuary)? Lovely sounding as they are, the ACs are a wee bit big in there and will likely head into my new office being built in China. It's a much bigger room that should suit the V3Ms much better.

Congratulations again,
Garry

Thanks, Garry,
I'm very pleased with the sound and my wife loves how it looks in the living room. I fell in love with the MS speakers when I first auditioned them and they've impressed me more and more since then (see review posted on A'gon a few weeks ago). Excellent value in Hong Kong as well. Very well matched to the MF gear.

You're right about the bedroom speakers - Rogers Studio 1a. Very smooth, warmish tone with the Cayin tube amp (A-88T) or the class A (H80-A). This is very much a get away from it second system - not truly accurate but highly enjoyable.

I had a look at your posted system as well - looks very cool! I'm sure it must sound a treat.

Hi Hens,

Wow! Forget "effective" - I think you should change the system name to "Simple But Stunning"!:) Very clean and well integrated with the decor. Funny thing is, it is not easy to make it look simple - it takes a lot of thought and work. Needless to say, your wife must be thrilled - very well done.

The MS P6 is a really nice speaker and great VFM. Heard it with the Nuforce 9SEs and it was very impressive indeed. Very transparent and balanced top to bottom range-wise, with quick and tight, but not overemphasized, bass. Given this, it seems odd as to why it is not a more popular and/or talked about speaker?? Having heard just about every piece you have, I can imagine how wonderful your setup sounds.

Hard to tell from the picture, but are those Rogers speakers in your bedroom? If so, they must sound very sweet with the Cayin (another VFM champ).

Hens, no need to upgrade for quite some - you've really got a quite a nice system (actually 2) there!

Congratulations and happy listening,
Garry
