Description

After changing my system for the past several years, I think I have reached my goal (for now). My 2 sources are a 1950's refurbished Garrard 301 and a 21st century CD player with a Apple Mac Mini into the USB input. Hence, the name"Musical Juxtaposition".

The oil-bearing 301 was completely redone and placed in a 2-arm capable custom plinth by Steve Dobbins. Coupled with a Triplanar arm and Miyabi/47 labs MC cartridge, the combo plays music better than any other sourced I've listened to. My previous table was the SME 20/V which is definitely a great table. But after listening to the music from a idler table, I don't think I'll be going back to a belt driven table.

Hey Doc,

Yes, the Solovox speakers do take a lot of patience waiting for them to come to life. However, you will be greatly rewarded as you log several more hundred hours of playing time. I agree that your upstream components are a great fit for the speakers and I wish you many more years of enjoyment with the speakers.

Not only did the cats work as living, breathing damping material, they were also inter-changeable between the speakers and not so dependent to which speaker they slept in, but they did have their own preferences with loading into the left or right side :-)

Thanks for the nice comments. When I first took delivery of the Solovox speakers, I was very disappointed with the way they sounded. But after some patience, careful positioning, and a break-in period of about 100 hours, they are awesome. I think they match very well with my other components.

Unoear, did they sound better with the cats inside? Kinda like living, breathing damping material.

I love your A23 SoloVox speakers. I had a set for a while and they were able to present a full palette of sound at low listening volumes. My cats also were enthralled with the speakers. They would climb up in the back of the Solovox speakers and sleep in between the baffles. So, I had a Siamese cat in each speaker modulating inherent vibrations and slapping their tails mostly in beat with the music...they both preferred the blues.

Now I am "green with envy"

Curious: Just saw your thread; so what speaker are you considering getting shipped all the way from the UK?

Hi Rene,

Yes, my system has changed quite a bit since 2005! I'm in the process of looking for new speakers, but trying to audition some is rather difficult since there are not too many dealers near where I live. Unfortunately, I'm having to rely on other people's opinions/recommendations.

Hi from a fellow Fi owner - very nice combination! I responded to an old Omega thread of yours back in 2005 and it's nice to see what your system had morphed into.

I used to own the Omega Super3R before switching to Cain Abbys and been impressed with single-drivers since. Very difficult to move away from single drivers - I do like some multi driver speaker that use a single driver for most of the frequency range (e.g. Verity). Otherwise I am still curious about the Solovox which I guess you may consider.

Best wishes,

Rene

Thanks for the comments, Mark. Yes, for now I will stay with single driver speakers, such as PHY-HP based speakers. I'm OK with sacrificing a little bass response for great midrange. I guess everything is a compromise.

I like the Fi 2A3's, Nice system. I bet it works real nice with the speakers. Are you going to stay with single driver speakers or something else. anyway really nice.

Good question. I've slowly been upgrading starting with the source and preamp first. The speakers will be next. Looking at PHY-HP based speakers.

Did you have other speakers that you sold or got damaged? I'm confused about how those speakers could find themselves in this setup.
