Description

I've greatly enjoyed persuing people's Virtual Systems and looking at their cool pictures. I've had a system posted for about a year that has changed considerbaly since then, and never had any attached images. There's a good reason for that. I'm ashamed of my listening room. It's messy beyond belief, and some would consider unfit for high end audio.

Incredibly, I'm very happy with the results of my efforts. The room is approximately 12 x 14 feet, but has tons and tons of cabinets, desks and equipment. My 2-channel set up shares space with an HT seup, two computer stations, wall mounted bookcases, dressers and a bed.

I decided to post photos because some of you may want to see what that goofy Gunbei guy has at home. Well, if you look carefully you might notice a bathroom behind the left ProAc and a walk-in closet behing the right one. I have photos that better illustrate this, but I'm too shy to show them.

I promise, one day I will get this room together and pictures of a real system like the rest of you. But I've spent buying equipment and tuning my system to work in this bedroom/storage space, so I'm afraid if I clean it up the sonics will change completely.

The journey continues...

Eric, great to hear from you! How's the law practice going in ChiTown? You must really appreciate your system when you get a break to listen. I like your beautiful Windy City system by the way.

My photos here are old, I've changed some equipment around. One of the tings that's new is a Bel Canto SET40 amp. It's a 37wpc 845 based SET and works really well with my ProAcs. Your SET amp looks awesome. I can only imagine the amazing soundfield it makes in concert with your Madisounds. My preamp uses 6SN7s as well, so I can in a way appreciate your affection for them. I've tried a lot of different preamps, but I just keep returning to my old discontinued Blue Circle BC21. I love the tone of those tubes.

It's been unseasonably cold and rainy here in LA a couple months past what it should be, although anyone from Chicago or Seattle for that matter would laugh at me. We're such wimps here.

I really like the way your room looks. The colors and the layout seem to have a blend of Asian and western modernism. The room and the system work well together. A female friend prepped and repainted my room for a whole week during the day while I was at work a couple months ago. She really transformed my place into a dark, relaxing listening haven.

Hopefully I'll have pics up soon.

hey dean...

haven't said hello in awhile, just thought i would drop a line to see how you and your system are doing. tried out anything cool lately?

hope things are well in sunny california. i think the winter is finally ending here in chicago!

You have to remember that Slappy is still quite young with an over-abundance of testosterone flowing through his veins. I think that if we can get Jax2 to start some stuff up, Slappy and everyone else will join in the chorus.

And don't forget Slappy! If we can pull him away from his lady and his car long enough to post.

gunbei

Now that you mention it Albert, it does seem a little bland around here. Nothing like a good Cyberlink or DK Design post with Jax2 and Gunbei!

audiofankj

I miss the (old) frequent posts of Gunbei and Jax2.

Audiogon needs a little humor, and both of these guys always had something fun or clever to post. Marco frequently made me laugh out loud.

I don't suppose Marco's musings on the topic of The Perch™ is still around?

albertporter

Ha. Ha. Yes, Jax2( our beloved Marco, with the wild imagination) has certainly made you very famous amongst the Audiogon members. I don't see too much in the threads lately from Marco as well. I think, maybe, that he also has gotten a little burned out, especially when he sees yet another one of his threads deleted by the moderators for no good reason. Sometimes it might be a good thing for us all to take a little hiatus from these threads just to appreciate some of the other finer things in life( like actually listening to and enjoying the music on our beloved systems(LOL). Being a neurotic audiophile( speaking strictly for myself), can be both a blessing and a curse at times. I find myself sometimes more caught up in the equipment than the music. There's surely got to be a happy balance. Happy Listening.

Best, Sherod

It always amazes me that you're the only one that knows where my monicker really comes from. Hah, if it wasn't for our friend Jax2, I'd be a pretty boring A'Gon member.

gunbei

Hey Dean! I wish that everyone would understand that you named yourself after the great Japanese warrior Gunbei( pronounced Goom-bay) and not that green, slanted-head Gumby. That silly Jax2 sure got carried away with it, didn't he? By the way, how is your Dad doing? Does he need any more Sansui stuff? I'm in a generous mood and want to send him something. I'm glad you're enjoying your system, but your posts are declining. Either you've got the burned-out syndrome or maybe you've been just plain busy in your career.

Best regards, Sherod

LOL. He's getting his slanted head trimmed and shined.

Where is the little green man I've been reading about?

Thanks Brian. ProAc's tonal balance really suit my taste. Besides these floorstanders I've owned two sets of their monitors. I don't think the 2.5s would be a good choice as HT mains, but their midrange has me hooked. I can't wait to see what you try in your cabin next!

gunbei

Hey Gunbei, we've had some of the same gear. I've never owned those ProAc's though but I have heard them in store and enjoyed them a lot!

Ooops, sorry guys. Haven't been in here in a long time. Any good argumentative threads recently?

gunbei

Hey Gunbei,,,,are you back from your voyage yet??

Albert, I just booked passage on Captain John Green's boat and I'm gonna stay at Jed's Seafish Apartment. Of course I get the local GREEN discount.

Since I'm not set up to play vinyl, I'll have to place the Greendale LP on the mantle next to my Art Clokey portrait painted in true Blockhead Cubism.

gunbei

Gunbei,

I just bought Neil Young's "Greendale." A box set with green exterior. Inside are three 180 gram LP's with solid green dust jackets.

Digging deeper, you will find a 7" SOLID green vinyl pressing (a single) in a custom green picture sleeve.

Also included, is a genuine "Greendale" bumper sticker (yes, it's green).

Your audio system (dare I say, your life?) will not be complete until you have this box set for yourself.

No, I doesn’t look like any of the illustrations were done with 8X10 camera.

Gumie Boy reporting in.

Thanks Chadnliz!

Sorry, but I need all those points around my gear. They seem to act as voodoo barriers against all the spiders in my room.

I got lot's of other gear not posted and my system cofig is actually different than the one posted. So when the dust settles and all the arachnids and arthropods have been rooted out, I'll post an updated system.

gunbei

boy you have some nice gear there Gumie! Roll some of those extra points towards Ohio and I will grab them off I80.....happy listening
