Description

The philosophy of this system is 'less is more in the analog domain'. The core of this system is the Meitner DCC2 'all in one box DAC / CD - DSD format converter / passive Pre-amp'.

The System uses a minimalist topology with out the usual stand alone Pre-amp to get the signal from the DAC to the volume controlling device. This avoids the losses / colorations inherent in all interconnects & pre-amps.

The Meitner DCC2 takes the raw digital data from the Meitner CDSD transport using their Propietary fibre optic link.

For CD replay the DCC2 performs CD to DSD format conversion on CD data which is then converted to analog using the DCC2's high linearity DSD DACs.

For SACD replay the DCC2 converts the DSD data to analog using the DCC2's high linearity DSD DAC's.

The DCC2 can accept up to two pairs of Aux inputs, one pair in RCA format and the second in XLR format. I connect my Magnum Dynalab MD108 tuner via the RCA input using DNM solid core / Eichmann Bullit plug interconnects.

Source switching / volume control is done by the built-in resistive divider network in the DCC2.

The volume controlled signal is passed from the DCC2's Pre-amp output to the Dartzeel NHB108 a 100w amplifier by DNM solid core RCA interconnects.

The Amp is connected to the speakers by a single 10 foot + / - run of DNM solid core speaker wire.

The Speakers are the Limited edition $6k JMlab Electra Be 927s..these 3 way speakers cover 40 to 37 Khz & feature the cutting their edge Beryllium tweeter...the $11.5 k JMlab Diva (35 hz - 40 Khz) is a likely upgrade for this system.

The DNM cables lack of smearing / outstanding timing cues really shine with these super quick / low distortion Beryllium Tweeters.

David:

I owned or own most of the equipment you listed. Personally, I don't find the EMM Labs stuff slow or lacking in definition. Hardly. By any chance, what EMM transport did you listen to: the modified Phillips SACD-1000 or the CDSD? I've owned both, and the CDSD is a quantum leap in performance over the Phillips. IMHO, it's not even close. Also, I'm assuming that you listened to the EMM gear in the context of the Kharma/Tenor system. Personally, I find it hard to make a judgement about any one piece of gear unless you swap it out with something else and keep the rest of the system intact. I agree with you somewhat about the Tenors and the Kharmas. I've heard the Tenor 75Wi and owned the 300 hybrids. I was very disappointed with the 75s--I found them seriously lacking in dynamics--and I ultimately traded the 300s for a pair of the DarTZeels. While there were many things I liked about the 300s--particularly their explosiveness and oodles of dynamic reserve--I found the DarTZeels to be superior for my listening priorities. I've heard most of the Kharma line, including the Grand Ceramiques--I owned the Midi Equisites and wound up selling them for the Von Schweikert VR-9s--and, while they're doubtless an excellent line, I find them generally overpriced performance-wise for what they offer. They are an extraordinarly well-built and beautiful looking speaker, though. I think, among all the Kharma speakers, I've been most impressed by the combination of the 3.2 and the Ceramique subwoofer. IMO, it's easily the best value in the Kharma line. The top-of-the-line Exquisite 1D with the diamond tweeters is still the best performing of the lot, but, then again, for $120k+, what do you expect?

Dear all,
I personnaly listened to a EMM LAB player + DCC2 with Tenor 75Wi and 150 hybrid plus Kharma Grande ceramique and I have to admit that I was very ... disapointed
I found it "slow" and lacking definition...
Actually, I think those Tenor Hybird are highly overated and those Grand Ceramique as well. I believe the smaller Kharma or the exquisite serie is more valuable
What do you think ?

Very nice setup. I have the DCC2/CDSD combo with two NHBs and the Von Schweikert VR-9s, and I really couldn't be happier. Some people I know prefer a slightly warmer (i.e., tube) sound, but I think the EMM/DarTZeel combo presents the music as it was meant to be presented: crytal clear, with a bare minimum of distortion. That said, the upcoming battery-powered DarTZeel preamp, a prototype of which I heard at CES, ups the ante considerably. Cool rig!

Lazarus28 is correct - the DCC2 is not a passive preamp; it
contains active gain stages.

The DCC2 contains a 2 channel version of the multichannel
EMMLabs DAC6e, as well as a 2 channel version of the active
gain stages found in the Switchman pre.

EMMLabs, DarTZeel,... all very nice.

me likey. similar to mine, only mine is pretty far from minimalist, hehe. i'm using an apl-modded emmlabs sacd-1000 transport and an emmlabs dac 6 to an emmlabs switchman preamp to ATC active monitors. and i'm also using DNM solid-core cabling. btw, i'm pretty sure the pre in the dcc2 is not a passive pre - it's just a 2-channel version of the switchman.

and adonati - i have *no* idea what you're talking about re: the cables. methinks you got some bad info.

lazarus28

Yes, very minimalist! I'm sure the system sounds crystal clear too. Your choice of interconnects is very interesting... how are you compensating for the lack of extreme highs & lean bass known in the cables?
