Fernando - i completely agree with your preamp suggestion as my good friend has lent me a Gryphon LE preamp for a whole year. with the Gryphon LE, i've heard a more vibrant, vivid, and effortless sound from my system. it didn't change the signature of my system, but rather improved it many ways, and more importantly, music was more enjoyable with it. but i wouldn't say the preamp elevated my system to another level. given the very high cost of my dream preamps - Jadis JP80 and JPS2 - i believe the biggest bang for the buck improvement for me is to get better speakers.

on the subwoofer - i think best placement would be dependent on the end goal. seamless integration of the sub is more important to me than getting the lowest possible frequency response. therefore i choose to place it closer to my monitors. as fantastic as the Velodyne room correction software is, i wanted to use the equalizer minimally with signal purity in mind. i am thrilled with the results. if the sub shake my windows a bit more they might just crack!

one thing i haven't tried is elevating the sub by 20 inches per an audio dealer's suggestion, which may help with integration. just need to find a sturdy stand that is good looking as well...

Scott - I am big on Jadis - and have owned many of thier masterpieces in my life, congratulations on picking the beutifull sounding JA30s!

Maybe I missed the preamp make on your system listing, but a Jadis preamp will help a lot in having your Jadis amps working more linear and less stressed, I have been nto the no-preamp route and passive options but ended up again using a preamp in the audio chain due to the better dynamics, tonality and musicality they bring.

One last word - I just bought a Velodyne DD18 sub and ended up placing it as close to a corner as possible (it is also Velodyne's own recommendation BTW) - I see yours almost in the middle of your setup - have you tried different positions?

over the years, i've considered and auditioned Acapella Fidelio II, Sonus Faber Auditor, Harbeth Super HL5, B&W CM1, ProAc Response 1SC (heard Response 3.8), Avantgarde Duo, Tannoy Westminster (heard Yorkminster)...all setup with different electronics. however unscientific my auditions were, i’ve come to favor Acapella the most for their stunning clarity, speed, and liveliness.

while slowly saving up for the Acapella Violon, my Signature 805 continue to sing beautifully for my family and still represent a fantastic balance in value, performance, and physical beauty.

as for amps, on my list were McIntosh MC275 (never heard), McIntosh MC2102, Canary CA-330 (heard Reference One), Jeff Rowland Model 201 (heard Model 302 and Concerto), 47 Laboratory Gaincard (never heard)…but the moment i heard and saw Jadis gear (JP80) in person, i knew my search has ended. i treasure my JA30 more than any other audio gear i own and i don’t think that will ever change.

Nice system! - IMHO a pair of SonusFaber Guarneri might elevate your standards a bit! B&W are great too but the SF might bring you additional musical involvement.

many thanks for your kind words Mdhoover! my son is now 2.7 years old and my daughter is 7 months old. my son and i sometimes fight over whether we should listen to music or watch tv. one more reason to put the tv elsewhere : ) so far my daughter loves the shapes and colors of my equipment, as well as our music ^o^

i wouldn't say the taxi drivers in Taiwan are more crazy than the ones here in NYC, but the scooter/motorcycle drivers in Taiwan are really something else. i grew up riding on my mom's scooter. but when i hopped on the back of my cousin's scooter after years of not riding one, i was this close to wetting my pants...

The cab drivers were the most terrifyingly aggressive drivers I've EVER seen, ANYWHERE on this planet, including NASCAR. I don't know where it's best to start, I can say that I started on the cd player, where the anaconda vx made my jaw drop compared to the cardas golden reference/audioquest nrg-5/revelation audio labs precept II that I tried previously. I know the wadia player is a good piece and like most digital front ends, you will experience considerable steps forward with the best quality powercords on it (shunyata, elrod, purist audio, tranparent are some if the options but not the only ones, they are all however above the cardas, that much I can assure you of).

If you decide to start upgrading the pc's, then I can assure you that this upgrade will extend to your amps as soon as that first upgrade on the player is completed ... it's the only way IMO ... you need not necessarily go to the best, for example the python vx will offer most of what the anaconda vx offers for less and you can use that to get some pc's for your amps too ... but it will get pretty expensive ... that I can attest to ... but I think it was worth the results ... for the first time in my modest experience I was able to feel the music, to see into the soundstage ... all those things that I always saw others raving about ... now I understand them ... and now I cry sometimes when I listen to music that conveys the emotion it's supposed to.

Are you using the 805's with the diamond tweeters?

your system is a pleasure to see, I like your approach to bookshelf integration.

I used the golden reference powercords previously and always felt that despite their luscious and inviting sound, they always seemed to slow down the music flow in my system and lacked true transparency... the PRaT just wasn't there and I always felt like a bystander when listening to the music ... the upgrade to the shunyata anacondas was significant and I would recommend it very highly.

hi Gunbei, the dd-12 is truly amazing in performance and ease of integration. the on-screen user interface makes setup fun, educational, and easy. here is the before sub integration response chart:


i hate to admit it, but bass is one guilty pleasure i have grown to enjoy. bass from the dd-12 is very natural, articulate, and does not distract me from the midrange and treble. yo yo ma's cello sounds full, agile, and complete. the sub has no problem keeping up with my monitors.

I see you've added the Velodyne DD-12. I've been thinking of adding this very same sub to my system to serve both my music and HT systems.

Was it easy to set up and integrate? How do you find it's performance in your system? How has it changed/improved your music?

thanks Kalan and Sirlee! in my system, the amps are very sweet, transparent, full of soul, surprisingly powerful, and have excellent control and speed. the built quality feels like they can last at least half a century : ) i love them dearly.

Jay, those guys at htguide got me thinking of getting a pair of velodyne dd-10 subs...ahhh...it is either the subs or horns that i definitely can't afford...

Nice system! In every system I have heard that has a TV screen between the main (2-ch, music) speakers, the music-only-listening has improved dramatically by covering the TV screen with removable acoustic panels or a large, thick quilt--or something like that. Just cover the TV when you listen to music-only. Try it.

BTW, I have a soft spot for Jadis amps. Never heard one I didn't like. Also, a well-executed smaller, two-way based system is often easier to get to sound coherent than a larger, multi-way one with bass loading/standing wave and driver-integration issues. Stick to your guns.

Haha I made my wife addicted to the korean 'dramas', too- once we start one, she has to finish it wihtin a few days (usaully 20+ 1hr episodes). pretty hard work for me though, since I have to do simulteneous translations (we watch off the web). I've been refusing to start a new one for past few months ..^^

I've been to Taipai last summer- a great city, but just a little too hot for me
speaking of ladies, my wife is 3/8 japanese+ native taiwanese and raised in the states. (our kid's going to be a 'neo-asian' haha) my exposure to HK/Chinese music is through her. oh, btw, she, too wants the steinway..*_*

by the way, we also enjoy watching korean tv series ranging from melodramatic ones to those outrageously funny.

my wife is from beijing. she has suzhou, manchurian, and mongolian heritage. we met in high school and have been inseparable ever since.

upgrades are now in a very distant future for me. i think i will either go for horns, or the original b&w model nautilus, after i renovate the kitchen, bathroom, and get a steinway model L...i am such a dreamer * o *

Funny, our musical taste overlap alot (even with classicals) ;) -but no Sammi? (sp?)

you might wanna look into the new BW S or D series for upgrades. I heard the 803D and boy.. what a speaker!

btw, is the lady of the house Japanese? just a pure guess

i love panasonic plasma tvs. their picture quality betters the competition, while being very reasonably priced (42" plasma edtv pro model is currently $1,500)! the 50" hdtv pro model is also very tempting at $3,500...

before i received the cd player, i was using an old carver receiver as a preamp for dvd integration. i was very impressed with the clarity, presence, and engulfing movie soundtracks. i can easily live with 2 channel for movies. but now i am running directly from cd player to amps. i only get to use the tv speakers for dvd (yuk).

now i just drool over the jadis jps2. everytime i pass by my dealer i go in just to stare at it...

I've been thinking of a Panasonic EDTV Plasma myself. Are you satisfied with 2 channel for movies?

I like your Bell'O rack and their newer offerings as well because of the wood they're starting to incorporate. It adds elegance and warmth, and I prefer them to a strictly glass and steel design.
