Description

Hello, Uh...this is the first time I have ever posted my system anywhere. I've been coming on this site for a while and it always looked fun but it felt like I was trying to brag or something so I never did until now. I would like to upgrade the speakers soon but I'm broke right now. I still browse in the meantime. I haven't found anything that makes me really want to get rid of the DR7's yet as funny as that may sound. My price range would be below $1500 new or used and I'd like a large bookshelf or small floorstander no more than 37"tall that gets a low freq. range of 30Hz or below that plays all types of music well. Can't seem to find many though. I like all kinds of music but mostly classic rock/soul and jazz. Maybe some of you can help me out with a few suggustions. Take care. -X

Did you audition other ICs before settling on the TMCs? I'm putting together a Tube pre-amp / SS amp system and are looking for some places to starts for ICs.

I love that Pioneer RT-909, I have been a Reel to Reel follower for over 30 years. This one is very nice. Check out my system under Vincedog3. Nice to have another Reel to Reel fan out here at the 'gon.

vincedog3

Love your system. Tubes to shinning reel to reel.

I see that everybody is making fun of you milkcrate but if you realize the capabilities of an open reel tape deck with dual capstain drive, good isolation is not needed. This is the only time I will say this but the role of the capstain is to lock the tape and insure proper tracking. I would replace the milkcrate with something bigger so your 909 does not fall off. Recording is fun but the real joy of 4 track are factory pre-recorded tapes. Just go on Ebay & pick up any Ampex, Magtec or Columbia 7.5 IPS and lets see who will be making fun of your milkbox

Hello:

I also want to do the marriage of tube and SS. I have yet to audition the rogue 99 but many people in posts write that it is noisy and sound more like SS.

What's your experience?

Regards

haroon

Quackfat, you are not wrong.

The Sylvania 6SN7GTB's are the best I've tried in the pre as well.

Xplastics, good to see Robfest pointed you in the right direction. If you are handy with electronics, look into the mods the Quackfat mentioned. They will take it up a notch.

Rives Audio has a page with link to room treatment/ speaker placement site.

I'll add a speaker in your price range (used):

I've not listened to them, but based on folks' reactions to them and on my own experience with Albert's speakers they are probaly a worthy contender.

Hey! Thanx Groove, I'll check out the Spendor's. I'm glad you listed a specific model...that helps. It seems we both need to sell stuff to get the cash for some new goodies :-)but I like to be prepared ahead of time anyway. Thanx again for taking the time to reply. To Robofet...I just got some NOS russian tubes from Upscale. They are very good quality. Upscale obviously has good testing equipment. Zero microphonics...$$ well spent...Thank you for pointing me towards them. "I"ll be back..." hehehehe - hopefully with recent pictures of my gear and room if I can get my camera to work again.

Speaker suggestion:

Try a used pair of Spendor 1/2 classic monitors. They are legendary for doing exactley what you listed. Play all kinds of music, good bass, efficient, musical, etc, etc. In your price range and tons of information/reviews on them. Check them out.

There are not many listed on Agon right now, but wait for a newer pair with a nice finish - they are listed all the time. I am going to buy a pair for my 2nd system after I sell some stuff. $1500 will get you that plus the stands.

Hi again! Thanks robo. I have heard that Upscale Audio has a nice selection of tubes from a few other people as well. I think I'll browse their site again...it's been a while since I was on it. If anyone has some advice on sound treatments, how to place them/websites with technical info I'd appreciate a link or 2. I live in an apartment now with a vaulted ceiling and it's really made me kind of aggravated with the sound i'm getting. I'm going to take some new pictures of the entire room and post it soon. Thanks again for the input.

Kevin at Upscale Audio is a good resource for tube recommendations.

robofet

i rolled some different tubes in that pre and found that (correct me if i'm wrong kp) i liked the sylvania 6SN7GTBs best. there are some other tweeks that yield great results like doubling the ps capacitance and rewiring with silver.

Hahahaha...the milk crate is no more....hehehe this is an older picture. I actually built a smaller rack to match the big one. Audiomax...yes master tapes have been on my mind I will be getting 2 after I sell some things on Agon and ebay. Piglet...I have had NOS tubes in the pre before. The microphonics were a pain when the pre was first turned on (click, click, click) but after the tubes heated up it sounded better than what I have for tubes now. I would like to try some different tubes again in the future...do you have any 6SN7 tube sugguestions? More dynamics, air, and deeper soundstage are always welcome in my system. Thanx to all of you for your sugguestions! I will check back on this post again so please keep the sugguestions coming.

xplastic

put spikes on that milk crate!!!

robofet

Get more reel to reel master tapes and enjoy highest quality sound.

audiomax

NOS tubes for the Rogue, 100 to 200 dollars.

Speakers would be Usher 6311s. MSRP is $2200, but worth the little difference.- they're a one time expense. Also be on the hunt for a BPT power conditioner.
