    I started interning there on weekends when I was in 11th grade in high school (working for albums and concert tickets), so that would have put me at 16 years old at the time. While in 12th grade, at 17 years old, I became a part-time employee there, while still attending high school one half day (I had enough credits to do that). After graduating high school, I became a full-time employee, and I was eventually put on the air as a part-time DJ (weekend overnights). 17 years old, and a DJ on a 50,000 watt FM rock station...yeah, it just doesn't get any better, and I think 1977 was one of the best years for rock music in general. In 1977 (in August of that year I turned 18) I was also appointed Music Director, which means I met with all of the record label reps, and decided what new album cuts we allowed the DJ's to play on the air. This was at a time when DJ's at that station, within limits, programmed their own shows. All in all, a great time in my life. Thanks for asking.

    I found a very long discussion here about DD and a great deal about TT101. My conclusion: Jaguar V12 owners and TT101 owners clubs should merge, they are probably the same masochists' anyway! Not for me.

    There is a video of a TT101 with the drag of 3 tonearms playing simultaneous with no degradation, that's something to see, I'll try and find it.

    Technics simply do not appeal to me visually. I got an SP15 from Harvey's NYC used shelf many years ago, gave it to my friend. I recently installed the B500 base and removable S arm on it, that is impressive indeed!!! I like their removable arm system better than VPI's unipivot, but I can see why people love them. If I did get a Technics, it would be either SP15 or SP25 with B500 base, S and Straight arms, dust cover.

    Kevin, Mr. Technics lives in walking distance from my house here in Plainfield, NJ. Jim, a friend I met via audiogon has two Technics he loves.

    Back in 1977, we finally decided to replace some broadcast standard QRK idler wheel turntables at the FM rock radio station I worked at. The idler wheel driven turntables were terribly noisy, and looking back, it's ridiculous that we tolerated them for so long (sorry, not a fan of idler's). Now at that time, the Technics SP-10 turntables (MKI & MKII) were already becoming the norm at most album rock radio stations, but for some reason, our engineer went with the Victor TT-101 model instead (qty. 2). Well, OMG, when we put those on the air, WHAT A DIFFERENCE in sound quality did they make(!!), and that was with re-using the old Rek-o-kut (what a name for a turntable and/or tonearm) tonearms that were taken from the old ORK idler wheel drive turntables. I mean the sound from those TT-101's was simply magnificent! Unfortunately, they only lasted for a few weeks in the on-air studio, because they intermittently would just stop. Y'know, a record would be playing on the air, and all of a sudden in the middle of the song, the turntable would just stop turning (even though there was still power to the turntable). This of course wouldn't be tolerated at *any* radio station, so after about 2 weeks, they were removed. The weird thing was, it would maybe happen like 10 times a day. Since our 27,000 watt FM transmitter (for a 50,000 watt station) was on the same floor, and basically right outside the on-air studio door, the engineers felt that RFI was getting into the TT-101's electronics, and affecting their performance. I didn't realize until later on in life what a high fidelity turntable those TT-101's were. Of course I was also blown away the first time I heard the Technics SP-10's (both MKI & II). Congratulations on possessing a TT-81!

    Some cartridges require separate control of gain and separate impedance. Those SUTs usually are more expensive. This one, it's 4 optional x factors and you get whatever the resultant impedance is via xfactor squared. Or, as labeled, you get 4 impedance choices, and the resultant x factor. I think 'needed signal strength' first, then what's the resultant impedance?

    Cartridges. I get terrific imaging from my system, 

    I prefer very tight channel balance combined with wide separation. I wont go stiffer than boron, and definitely an advanced stylus profile for increased groove contact. Alignment is critical when using advanced stylus shapes, I have the few inexpensive tools and acquired skills to do that for myself and friends.

    MC: Audio Technica AT33PTG/II (my 1st MC). I chose well. Microline on Boron, wide separation and tight channel balance. It tracks a bit heavy at 2g, otherwise I love it.

    MM: Shure Body, V15Vxmr with new Jico SAS on Boron Stylus with brush (not damped like shure brushes). tight center balance not quite as wide separation as the MC. Tracks at 1.25g

    MM: AT440ml, OEM microline on aluminum, no brush, wide and tight. In my office system. Also tracks at 1.25 g

    Mono: Grado Elliptical

    Mono: McIntosh Mode switch has Mono, and sometimes I use just 1 speaker via it's L+R to L mode. It's hard to break the habit of expecting/searching for imaging, this solves that and you can sit anywhere.

    I never tried very costly cartridges, mine are very involving, revealing the great, good, bad, ugly.

    That TT is the jewel for sure. JVC CL-P2 Plinth; TT81 spinner; my 3 chosen arms.

    I joined Audiogon to ask advice about a long tonearm. You are looking at the 3 arm result I never would have achieved without terrific help from many here, far beyond my original intentions. I have MC on the long arm (fixed); MM on the rear arm (removable, and replaceable stylus), and Mono MM on the left. I had and inherited a lot of LPs, most Jazz, many mono. SUT with 3 inputs, to my mx110z McIntosh tube tuner/preamp's wonderful sounding MM Phono. SUT has PASS for MM and 4 optional MC settings. Play Stereo/Mono without hesitation in a listening session.

    An absolute favorite tonearm is Acos Lustre GST-801, and one in mint condition is tempting me every day.

    my 12.5" long arm from Russia was a risk, but I took it, love it, this 5 pin din version not available when I got mine and had to strip and solder the tiniest litz wires known to mankind. Height of gimbal, and rear of arm just fit. I recently realized, that 12.5" arm will not fit on JVC CL-P3 3 arm plinth. to get a removable board on the left, they moved the board on the right closer to the spinner,

    The innards are electro-voice crossover, 15" woofer, 2 horns, and L-Pads from 1956 that I took out of my uncle's Fisher President II console that I inherited.

    The new rosewood enclosures were designed with the help of electro-voice engineers (they were still in nyc then). I designed and had made a lot of custom wood furniture for my clients (I designed office space). Rosewood was illegal to import by then, but my friend had been saving a small flitch (matching slices from a tree), just enough to make these for me. They are vented, but I have the vents blocked in this location. Previously, no wall behind them. 6.83 cubic feet I seem to remember. See open back photo, zero internal bracing, yet zero vibration. I have lots of Donna's niceties on the slanted top, nothing moves. I have full set of spare drivers, a woofer cone/coil kit (I've re-coned them, by a pro and myself a few times). First time I moved the woofer, I thought there must be more screws, the beast weighs 37 lbs.

    yes, that JVC Victor was near the end of the vinyl peak, a superior 7 layer plinth; excellent TT81 quartz locked direct drive spinner; sought after long arm 7082 with 2 important features: removable headshell and VTA on the Fly (easily adjust Vertical Tracking Angle While Playing/Listening). Plinth is big because it has a second removable tonearm board.in the back. I squeezed a 3rd arm onto that CL-P2 plinth.

    I have followed this site for eight months or so. I don’t know how to message someone hence this comment. I am getting started again. I am thinking of a new tt. Read your advice yesterday to the person upgrading. Your opinion and those of theirs that I follow interest me. Then I noticed you had the same tt. You mentioned you spoke to the seller on behalf of a friend looking to make a purchase. I have a music hall Mmf 2.2 with a music hall tracker cartridge and a paramount phono amp. I am a neophyte when it comes to turntables but handy. Could you please advise me whether you think this would be a big improvement.
    Either way thank you for your consideration.

    I couldn't figure out how to comment while viewing your systems, so I'm commenting here. you have a lot going on in all 3 spaces within very simple organized structure, that takes a certain kind of discipline which I know is part of your enjoyment. Must be fun moving speakers from system to system. Said and done, it's the speakers, and their appropriateness within their space, everything else is fascinating and expensive small potatoes.

    I had a friend over today, he went off with around 300 of the 4000 LP's I inherited that I will be parting with. Dazzled him with this and that, then: I played a MONO LP with stereo cartridge/mono mode; mono cartridge/dual mono; mono cartridge/shingle speaker, he understood how darn good recording techniques were way before stereo.

    Luxman, oh yeah, we started in my office, he couldn't believe how good this 10 wpc sounds in here. What Luxman do you have?

    What a table! I've got a Victor TT101 that's on JP's bench. He's 98 percent done with his magic. Looking forward to parking it next to my Luxman.

    It's a Cayin A88T, 45 wpc (22 wpc triode), I chose it after finding this review:

    came with 6550's, I changed to and prefer KT*88's. I don't need the extra power, but I prefer the ultralinear mode's sound). Original version with 16 ohm taps for my 16 ohm speakers. Newer ones have easy bias, this is internal, difficult and dangerous.

    That Russian Preamp is still on it's way BACK TO RUSSIA, sadly arrived with bad noise problem, couldn't resolve the problem, got full refund, bought a nice small Luxman Integrated Tube Amp SQ-N150 10 wpc for the office. It arrived in 2 days!
