Description

60/40 movies/music. Started out with a 27" SONY TV, NAK reciever, SSI pro-logic surround processor and Altec Lansing bookshelf speakers all for about $2K. I was hooked after watching Terminator 2 on LD.

12 yrs. later...as good as I can get for HT. Getting better in 2/ch especially with recent upgrade of the VAC 2ch pre and Audio Note dac.

I realize I'll always be compromising to a certain degree by not separating the 2 systems but I simply do not have the room. As is, I think it sounds pretty good!

Might experiment again in the near future with other AC conditioners.

Tvad,
I originally thought that I also preferred the APL thru my VAC pre but after more listening sessions, I decided without the pre was preferred. Tough choice though.

jose21

Funny, Jose, I like my APL Denon3910 better through my First Sound preamp. I guess that explains the wide variety of hot sauces.

tvad

Maybe you should sell the VAC then:-)

System edited: Replaced my VAC Renaissance MKII last month with the Placette Passive Linestage Preamp. Modified by Guy Hammel w/HT-bypass and mute function. Transparency is as advertised with no loss of dynamics. As much as I loved the VAC, the APL 3910 CDP player sounded better without a preamp so I could not justify keeping an $8K pre for HT bypass and a tuner.

hosefab,
I can't comment on how they'll match with your equipment (never heard the Aragon, Aurum pre) but I absolutely love them for 2 ch. My room is not that big (13x18x9) and the rear of the speakers are about 24" from the rear wall(using the long wall). Dali says 10" is minimum but I think you'll need at least 18".
I've read a few posts about the MS4 being on the bright side, but that is not my experience at all. I am using a tube pre/dac though, but every once in a while I'd listen thru my lexicon pre just for kicks. Of course it doesn't sound nearly as good but I still would not call that presentation bright.
Just make sure your dealer will take them back just in case you don't like them.

jose21

I'm considering the Dali MS4 for 2 channel, I've got a Aragon 8008BB & Aurum pre, small but open room, can't bring
them to far from rear wall, I listen to pop-rock, jazz and everything else at high volume, how do you like them for 2
channel music ? think the'll work for me ?

hosefab

I know now why you love the Dali,Robert Harley from
Absolute sound think highly of them.I trust that
guy. I like the color.Plasma, bro you are getting
big time now.If I ever go to New Jersey.I will stop
by you.I use to live in Engelwood New Jersey.

Hi Bon,
Thanks for the kind comments. The speakers are 24" from the back wall. I can't bring them out any further or they'll be sitting on my lap ;-)
I'm pretty happy for now with the soundstage and depth but hopefully I can save up for a plasma next year and get rid of the "big box" in between. It's not so easy getting rid of my RPTV 'cause I just love the picture and I watch lots of movies.
Just replaced the tubes in my DAC with Bendix 5852/Telefunken 6DJ8 NOS and all I can say is WOW!!!!!!!

jose21

Jose this is Bon so you got the the Dali,Nice
speakers,lots a cables,and gear,I notice the
speakers, are in between the TV,I just wonder
if you tried to bring them out 2 more feet.Dont
you think, the soundstage, the depth, will improve?
I am sure your system,is everyones dream.Nice
room though.

System edited: Have been demoing Audience AU24 interconnects between pre and amp the last week or so. Very neutral and precise. I understand why many like them but I find it a little "dry" sounding and uninvolving in my system. Have the AZ Martrix II coming in later in the week. Hopefully will be more to my liking.

System edited: Recently received VD NITES PC and digital cables. Straight into the wall without the Brickwall surge protector, the PC's benefits were immediate. Less haze, deeper soudstage/bass, quieter background noise ...(I know, I know it, it's a cliche...but they're TRUE.) Clarity without a hint of brightness in 2ch(....this from the LEX MC12). Was going to invest on a good 2ch preamp but now I'm not sure I need it. Still not sure about the NITE digital though. I might still prefer the "sound" of my Acoustic Zen MC2. I'll wait another 200 or so more hrs. before I decide.

Jose,
I'm VERY satisfied with the NHT 3.3's. I purchased them as dealer demos for $2000, with full warranty. I've had no problems with them. I *thought* I had a bad lower-midrange, and contacted NHT. They just asked for the serial numbers, and sent me a new pair of mids. The "chuffing" sound I was hearing was being produced by the preamp, so the midranges are still new in the box.

They're the most unforgiving speakers I've ever owned. They really shine with a good recording, and great electronics. But bad recordings sound extra-bad, and bad equipment--- even worse! They sounded their best when I was just using them for music. I had a Sunfire 300 stereo amp (bi-wired via the current and voltage outputs of the Sunfire), and was using a Balanced Audio Technologies BAT VK-3i preamp. Sweeeeeeet.

But I moved back into home theater, and can't seem to capture that same magic. But I'm not disappointed. I enjoy movies more than ever. And music is just a tad less intoxicating as with the aforementioned combo.
Enjoy!

David,
How do you like your 3.3s? I was originally set to get them but my dealer gave me a great deal on the VT3s. Those 2.5is' are great speakers, especially for the price. 2 of my buddies have 4 all around and a center. Nice sound.

foreverhifi2000,
I know what you mean about the display. Unfortunately, I can't do it in my present room. Those plasmas are looking really good though.

Thanks guys and happy listening,
Jose.

jose21

Yeah nice gear. I think the only major upgrade for you would be going from a rear projection TV to a screen and front projector for GREATER CINEMATIC IMPACT!!!
I'm personally to the point where "big screens" just don't cut it for me anymore...that's me of coure. There's SO MUCH MORE pressence and ENVELOPEMENT or sense of GRANDJURE with the larger screen! And, the technology is getting SO afordable now!..something to consider
Enjoy

NHT Audio Center 2
NHT HDP-2's (sides)
NHT 2.5i's (rears; wall-mounted; upside down, on custom brackets)
A pair of Mirage BP-400 subwoofers

AMPLIFICATION:
A pair of Anthem MCA-2's bi-amping the 3.3's.
An Anthem MCA-5 driving the other 5 speakers.
Each Mirage with a 400w internal monster.

PREAMPLIFICATION:
(temporary weak link, just sold my Citation 5.0)
Sherwood AVP 9080R

VIDEO:
Toshiba 60" SD (4-years old; not bad, but not hi-res either)
Sony DVP-CX850D 200 disc changer
Marantz DVD-18 (champagne finish)
Pioneer CLD-D704 Laser Disc
Panasonic S-VHS deck (only used for stereo decoding of cable TV, and for the kid's videos)

AUDIO SOURCES:
Enlightened Audio Design CD-1000 Series III
Enlightened Audio Design DSP-9000 Series II
Kinergetics Research KCD-40 Platinum

INTERCONNECTS:
Straightwire Rhapsody II
Straightwire Encore
Kimber HERO
Kimber KCAG
Tributaries VS-3 S-video
Tributaries V1 Composite Video & Digital

SPEAKER CABLES:
Monster Cable M2.2 for the mains & center (in-wall)
Monster Cable M1.2s for the other 5 (in-wall)

Probably closer to 60/40 for me (HT/music). Very happy with the system, but hoping to upgrade to a front projection system in the spring. The bezel of the TV rattles because of the side-firing woofers of the 3.3's. I'd like to try the Anthem AVM-20 for new pre/pro. The room measures 16' x 25', with 9' wall on the video end, and the ceiling rises to almost 13' at the rear of the room. The dual subs are overkill for most music, but can't be beat for HT. The wall mounts for the 2.5's are sweet, and put the tweeters a little above ear-level for better dispertion/ radiation.

Sounds like your system has evolved. What a wonderful therapy. It's my drug of choice as well.
Enjoy your system.
David.

Ivanj, jazz with a little bit of a "pop" flavor, a little more lively, sort of like "lounge" music. Just a change of pace. No particular artists, I just know the sound when I hear it. By acid rock, do you mean like Pink Floyd, Greatful Dead, J.J.,Creedance.."60s-early 70s??? If it is, it's nothing close, but Floyd's cool...
