Description

I have been in this hobby over 30 years and in that time have had the pleasure and good fortune to own many many high end components and gear.  My goal in the past 6 years was to progress to a smaller footprint than my big Genesis speakers with Vitus monos, and still have great sound.  I just didn't have the room in my new home for the big system AND all the boxes and crates!  LOL.

I tried a number of fantastic products over those 6 years......Manley, Zanden, the amazing D'Agostino, Coincident, Backert Labs, Vitus, APL, Jeff Rowland, Emm Labs.  I'm finally settled on my MSB/ EMM DV2 combo, with Absolare Stereo amp and Tannoy Speakers.........bit of a mix for cables, with Echole Omnia, TEO, Stage III Gorgon and Musica Bella Kuala2 power cables.  Pics to come.

    • Tannoy Canterbury GR
The newest and greatest from Tannoy, the Gold Reference series. Still breaking in the system but loving it!

Six years later, very very happy with these speakers.  They gave me exactly what I was looking for stepping down from my 4 tower Genesis speakers.  Still wanted great sound, emotion and soul and a much smaller footprint.  On top of that they can pound out some unbelievable bass, and drums, when I kick things up.  I've tried many different amps with these speakers, to get what I feel is right.  I finally feel like I've hit a home run with the Absolare/Tannoy combo....just unbelievable.
    • Absolare Passion Hybrid Stereo
The latest amp from Absolare.  Released end of May 2020.  Just breaking it in.  Fabulous tone and soundstage already. Added some NOS 12AU7 tubes from the 1950's and 1960's and this amp just loves them.
    • MSB UMT Plus
Plays and Spins everything digital, including 3D BluRay.  Awesome.
    • MSB Technology Dual Signature Power Base
I was using a desktop power supply for my MSB UMT Plus.  Switched to a new Dual signature power base from MSB.  Love the improved performance.
    • EMM Labs DV2
Latest and greatest from EMM.  Picked up new July 2020, with newly designed remote.  Awesome unit.  Improvement in Soundstage depth, tone, timing, bass, voice.  Without a doubt my last DAC.
    • EMM Labs NS-1
Added the EMM Labs Streamer, NS1.  This will be my 1st time steaming, looking forward to the convenience when not spinning discs.
    • Tripoint Troy Signature NG
This is the third Troy I’ve owned, amazing gear.
    • Stage III Concepts Gorgon Interconnect
Sold the Purist and moving to the Stage III Concepts top of the line Gorgon.  It's on order and should be here within 2 weeks.  Loved the Purist of course, fantastic cable!  The Stage III stuff I'm interested in because of the body it adds, even moreso than the Purist.  Love that big beautiful romantic sound......will see soon just how different it is from the Purist, or not!!
    • PS Audio P15
Added the PS Audio P15 power regenerator.  Upgrade from the P12.  Very very happy with the performance of PS Audio Regenerators.  I have everything plugged into it.
    • Stage III Concepts Medusa Speaker Cable
    • Stage III Concepts Cerberus Jumpers
Best Jumpers Stage III sells……..the Tannoy Love them.
    • Musica Bella Kuala2 power cords
Design and build by Mike Vice with Bybee influence.  Check out Clement Perry review.
    • Stand: Home made
I made my stand using a double layer of Maple, so it's 3.5" thick on the shelves.  Weight is easily 300lbs.  This made a serious improvement in the sound.  Really seemed to literally anchor the music in place.  Was a lot of work and it's not perfect by any means, but I'm very very happy with the results.
    • Critical Mass Systems Centre stage footers
    • IsoAcoustics GAIA
Put these footers on my Tannoy and the results are fabulous.  The speakers now sound like they weight 1000lbs.
    • Walker Valid points
These were laying around doing nothing so put them under the digital gear.  Not sure if they made much difference as I've had lots going on in the system lately, but I do love the look and extra height they give the gear for airflow.
    • QSA Black/Red Receptacle
Wow, love these!  Thought I would try the Red Receptacle first, loved it so much I immediately upgraded to the black/red!!
    • HRS S3 Platforms
A couple of HRS Platforms for the EMM Labs gear.
    • Hemingway Creation Power Cord
I owned the Hemingway speaker cable and loved it…..thrilled to get some Hemingway back in the system via this Power Cord.
    • HighEnd Novum PA MkII
    • ADD-POWR Sorcer X4

Thanks for the comments Glenfihi. The speakers are pretty incredible.......I don't like the footprint they have (take up alot of space), but, what can you do.....I hope to be able to get a smaller speaker some day and not lose too much in sonics.

bullot

Enjoyed reading your and other comments on your audio trek. Would love to hear speakers such as yours.

Great room set up down to the bass in the corner. Happy Listening.

glenfihi

Excellent...sounds like a lot of fun!

Hey there Mark.....yeah lots new in the past year or so, the Vitus mono amps and preamp and now the MSB. I have about 400 hours on the DAC now and it is the best sound I have heard, really.....very nice! Big improvement in soundstage, detail and realism. I know that's a relative statement, big, but it really was big. Has to be the biggest "upgrade" I have done in years. I am very excited to have it break-in even further, and get the transport into the system as that will eliminate a weak link in my i.c. between the Faroudja and the MSB Dac. Very excited about the MSB sound and options and upgradability!

bullot

Wow....major upgrade! I have not heard the MSB gear; many people talk very highly of it. Can you let me/us know more when the DAC arrives?

System edited: Just added a new MSB Platinum Dac to the system, awaiting the MSB Universal player to be built and then will be moving out my amazing modded Faroudja source.

You can always bring back that preamp :-) ! BTW...try the new PC on your preamp sometime...I think you'll be amazed (I was)!

Yes the law of Deminishing returns has kicked in big time! I now can taylor my sound to what I like knowing whether I'm losing quality in the mix or not! I am happy with the system obviously but do miss very much my Joule preamp, that thing breathed soul into the system!

bullot

Shane...also glad to hear that the Statement Gold PCs are making your amps happy! They do amazing things for a system and based upon what I've heard reveal all that a given component is capable of producing. Very happy with the results in my system as well!

zephyr24069

Thanks for the info on returning to the Hifi gold fuses and the maestro outlets...I can relate on reaching a plateau that you are very happy with and essentially deciding to relax and just enjoy the system. I think there is a point of diminishing returns where that extra 0.1% (exaggerating...) improvement is just not worth what it takes to get there :-)!

Hey Mark, good to hear from you! Lovin the amps! I have an Elrod Gold Statement on each one now! It's a busy time of year for me, 72hour work weeks for the next couple of months, so not really any time to listen!

I had tried the liquid fuses but one blew upon turning power on to the system, so I nixed that idea and am just using the hifi gold I believe! (Can't keep up with myself)

I honestly think I will be on system standbye for a few years, as any upgrades or changes I would consider are expensive! (smaller but high end speakers, source)

If you are looking for a cheap upgrade worth it's weight in gold, try the Maestro outlets! Yowsa!!

bullot

Hey there! How are the new amps, pcs, etc...treating you? Have you had much time to listen as of late given work and life demands? I've finally got some time I reclaim from work in the days ahead and I think I'll be giving the fuses you recommended a while back a try. It should be a very interesting and revealing test. Have you stuck with those fuses or have you found additional ones that you'd recommend?

zephyr24069

Owner
I had just got the liquid fuses and one blew on me! It may be my fault as the manual said 10A fuse but the ones in it were 12.5A fuses! I went with the 10 A to be safe and one popped as soon as I put power to it! Could have also been a faulty fuse, don't know for sure! I now have new fuses coming in that are not liquid but are high-end fuses! I find the good fuses clean things up a tad! I find them to perform along the same line as the Bybee stuff or Tripoint Troy! Of course not nearly at the same level but then again they are $30 or $40 each

bullot

Bullot ,
Could you tell me a little more about the "liquid fuses" how does it help.

boeing

It's definitely worth the time to talk to your dealer and get an audition set of the speaker cables arranged! I would truly be surprised if you didn't wind up raving about them with your speakers given what I know about them.

Thanks Mark, I would love to try the Elrod considering the power cable performance! Wish I could try both Elrod and Opus in my system, it would be so much easier to decide! I am in no hurry, I've spent wayyyy too much the past couple of years, on my audio system! I also have Teo Liquid ic's which I love, and auditioning the speaker cable version would be a thrill.

bullot

When you are exploring your curiousity for the Opus, you may want to include the Elrod Sig Gold speaker cable; after years of hearing many different speaker cables from different sonic philosophies, the Elrod really opened my eyes and ears as to what was possible. Merry Christmas!

zephyr24069

Thanks Lapierre, and that's a great question! I think I will sit tight for a while and just listen to tunes! I am curious about Transparent Opus speaker cable, but would like to audition first......kind of tough to audition some of this stuff!! I love the Joule sound and it would be great if I could get my hands on the LA450 for an audition! I would also like to get a speaker with a smaller footprint, however I don't want to spend a ton of money just for a smaller footprint! I suspect if I come across a deal on Elrod power cords I will get two for the amps, otherwise I think I'm on standbye for a while!

bullot

Nicely done Bullot.

Congrats on the Vitus amps.

What's next on the HiFi roadmap?

lapierre

Owner
Thanks Maxx. Just after plugging the Vitus in for a day or two my new Elrod Gold Statement power cord arrived for the preamp, and it's a beautiful thing. Impressive PC. Right now I am using Isoclean Supreme Focus as amp power cords, but would love to try the Elrods there some day!

Today I received some new Liquid fuses for the Vitus and can't wait to try them in the next couple of days!

bullot

"Bullot",

Congrats on the new amps. The Vitus amp are indeed very very good. I'm using them as well and have had the 33H in the past as well :). After the 33H I upgraded to Dartzeel, which I liked a lot too before moving for the Vitus SM-101. Think the Vitus has the best of both Dartzeel and 33H together.

Happy listening

maxx1973

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you my friend...be well and take care!

Thanks Mark! I still may have some customs issues to work out, I'll know shortly! Don't know what it is with me and amps that gets customs and shippers in a frenzie! Actually to be fair it was the shipping company that messed things up badly with respect to paperwork.......these amps being from Denmark and shipped from USA!!!

I hope one day to get my hands on some of that Elrod gear you are so happy with!! Merry XMass and nice to hear from you again!
