Description

I like the sound of tubes so I’ve moved away from solid state. I now use a tube amp and preamp and listen to a number of sources.

Switched from solid state amp and preamp to tubed units

Hey @gsmith5 ,
Long time no updates. What's new in the system?

DB-25 cable from Revelation Audio Labs was a great addition to my Pass Labs xp-20 preamp. Highly recommended.

Waiting on my new dB-25 power cable from Revelation Audio Labs for my Pass Labs preamp. Brad promised this week

Purchased MQA core decoder for aurender N10. Allows first unfold 24/96. Tidal masters sound great.

Added PS Audio DS DAC and transport. They sound great, the exceptional reviews are not hype

Wow.... My system is so much like yours I can't believe it.  Proac D30r / Simaudio 870a / Classe preamp / Aurender / and all Nordost cables.  I see that you run your speaker cable to the ribbon tweeter and jump the mid/bass driver.  I tried that setup but it sounded too thin.  Were you getting too much bass from the left speaker being close the the corner?  I also upgraded the stock spikes to Nordost Sort Fut which made a big improvement.  I am now working on taming a few bass peaks with EQ and room treatments..... You have a beautiful set-up and I bet it sounds great!

I have purchased a demo pass labs xp-20 with swap in of my pass labs xp-10. It will be here next week on 10 day approval/return. I can’t wait

gsmith5

Same feeling I get after returning from auditioning loudspeakers. It is most likely because we have optimized our system and also taken great pains to place the loudspeakers in the optimal spot.

RMAF was good, I’d say my system was in the top 20 % of what I heard on the 11 floors of equipment on display.

gsmith5

gsmith5,
Would like to hear about your experience at RMAF.  Have fun!

Well I will be off to Rocky Mountain Audio Fest next week to see what sounds great versus price

The bass is definitely better controlled with the audio points. I believe I will still have to do somework on room acoustics.

gsmith5

Is the smearing of the notes due to flabby bass? I noted that during the demo at AXPONA this year. Maybe it was the room. But in the demo last week, the bass was better controlled than that at AXPONA.

milpai

Owner
The audio points are definitely better than the stock spikes, they remove some of the smearing of the notes. They are very sharp.

gsmith5

How are the Audio Points spikes working? What difference did those make over the stock spikes.

Currently I'm using a magnum dynalab SR100 silver ribbon antennae that goed through a magnum dynalab 205 signal sleuth amplifier to the accuphase T-1100 fm tuner. The Magnum Dynalab SR100 is the best indoor antennae I've tried, and I've tried many. I get by with an indoor antennae because my main listening station Q99.1 in Roanoke, VA has 190,000 watts of broadcast power.

gsmith5

I listen to FM quite a bit as there a many great stations in my area. Curiously, how is the performance of the Dynalab FM antenna over a basic dipole?

Thanks for the comments MJ. I view audio has a continuous improvement journey. I get great enjoyment listening to music in the evening.

gsmith5

Really a great looking system, clean and well defined. Someday I would love to hear music through a system of this caliber.

Replaced stock spikes on Proac speakers with Audio Points.

The finish on the Proacs is rosewood which is an adder.

gsmith5

Good to know about the bass response of the D48Rs in a similar room. What finish is that on your ProAcs?

milpai

Owner
I have heard the Proac D48Rs. I felt like they would have too much bass for my room geometry. I debated between the Proac D20Rs and the D30Rs and went with the larger. I will say they need a lot of break in time 500+ hrs.

gsmith5

I just keep coming back to your system. Can you please describe your experience with these loudspeakers? I see you have some formidable gear to go with the ProAcs. My room is so similar to yours (15 X 18 X 8). Did you hear the D48Rs, by any chance?
